Land rover winch

I'm thinking of getting a capstan winch for the front of my Landy
A nice addition to an old land rover might only use it once or twice but could be handy if I get stuck in sand on the beach one day
Anyone got one?

I used to have a SWB series 3 with a capstan winch run off the bottom pulley, great bit of kit & more useful than the modern drum winches imho. I wish I'd never sold the bugger

I have owned a couple in the past , as said above great bits of kit.

If you can find a complete aeroparts these days they are big money, faireys a bit more common but still not cheap.

I have been collecting aeroparts bits for a few years and have just in the last few months got a complete set at reasonable money

If you do get one: be aware that there are several different types of engine mounting brackets for the crank drive dog , 1.6/ 2ltr or 2.25 they are not interchangeable and are the proverbial hens teeth.

If you need any help with any info just shout and will try to help if I can.

Enlighten me, I've had a capstan on a series and also owned, sold and used many, many elec and hydraulic winches over the last 25 years, but never found a capstan superior on any level to a modern winch - am I missing something?

Use just about any rope, of any length. Variable speed if you know how to use 'em. Not battery dependant, no heat issues when used over long periods etc etc.

Electric winches just look WRONG on a series.

The PTO drum winches are good but very big and heavy.

Maybe not battery dependant but definably engine dependant!
Any rope? Not sure about that – as you know capstans utilise friction to grip the rope, friction = heat and combined with nylon / poly rope and long periods??? Your also are VERY reliant on a proficient operator and no ‘over-wraps’ which are great fun when there’s load on the rig. If your solo, your motors stuck and you need to ‘drive assist’ whilst winching that’s also interesting with a capstan………………………

Capstans have there uses but are old last century technology, engineering moves on, compact, powerful, braked, wireless winches running synthetic lines , when was the last time you saw a capstan fitted to a modern vehicle?
