the new deafner will not be out until at least 2015 and the new engine fitted to MY12 sees the current model through until 2017 at least. It is simply the pedestrian regulations that the current model falls short upon.

Based on customer appraisal of the DC100 (simply an RRS in drag) Land Rover are going to display a more utilitarian long wheelbase pickup at one of the big shows this year. Thats the biggest problem with replacing it - the versatility of the current model, and how that can be translated into something a little more modern.

Don't forget that it was thanks to the original RR that the stage one's leafs were transformed into the coils of the deafner and thus improved drive ability etc. If the new deafner is based on the current RR then it should be no bad thing. This issue is the ability for customer modification, not only between bodystyles as is currently so easy but also for 6x6 conversions etc - the chassis cab version must continue to be produced, but with a monocoque chasis, how easy that is going to be to acheive is another matter.

When was a 6x6 conversion classed as easy?

Most people who go off road leave them off any way ??, I look after a fleet of 10 L,Rovers including Life Guard and Ranger vehicles and 90% of the time they get torn off, (off road).

Not quite right. I bought and paid for the sea rider (ask Matt h), trailer, commercial insurance, MCA coding, Police certification, safety equipment and crew training up to comm endorsed APB & yacht master. Plus I pay the harbour & launching dues and do much of the work in my own time. The forces contribution is the use of their vehicle some fuel & time.

Why? Because marine crime is not a priority for Police Forces but it is for me. So rather than drip about it I've got on and done something about it and as a consequence with the support of local boat watches, mariners like yourself, harbour authorities and E.A. We have reduced marine crime in my area by 50% since 2008 and arrested and convicted a number of marine thieves.

Cost to me personally around 10k so far. Please don't tar an entire organisation with one brush. You know what they say about assuming.

Relative to the modification of a monocoque for the same purpose. There's a reason why there were so many Carmicheal etc conversions of the original RR but you'll be hard pressed to find the same done to a modern RR, a few limo conversions aside.

Well yes that's true!?

Nearly all the Carmicheal RRs were 6x4 and most deafner conversions are 6x4. There's a Swansea?? Airport FD deafner with 6x6 and some of the TACR2s were 6x6 I think. However for simplicity's sake most firms/people would use a normal defender rear axle for the third axle and hence shouldn't adding drive to the rearmost axle be a fairly simply operation?

Thinking about it though, that's complete rubbish! How do they get power from the middle diff to the rear...that's really not something I would know how to do at all!

The Jersey F.D. TACR pickup trucks were 6x4 I think?

Real 6X6. Spotted on tour in Iceland. I was (as a Defender driver) a little unmanned in it's presence. Scornfully I muttered: Where would you go with that lump?

Well, said donegaldan, anywhere you wanted to, I suppose....
