Land Rover Defender

Mudguards !

Im having to replace my second mudguard in less than 1 year, is it me or is there something very crap about the design of the mudguards on land rover defenders. Having a close look the amount of rubber in terms of thickness doesn't look very much when you consider it flaps against the joining plate.

Anyone else have a defender and have found they have to replace the mudguards too much ?

Anyone know of an after market product which will last longer than the original manufactured mud guards ?

having spent a good deal of time around landys (usually towing them!) i can tell you there is something very crap about the whole vehicle! i will admit that they are as they say the best 4x4xfar off road, but hell they drop to bits, rattle and have a self changing oil system - more commonly known as a leak!
my advice, dont be so tight fisted and go out and buy something from japan!

...that should cause some trouble!

I've put 90k miles on my 110 and only lost one mudguard. I can't complain as I actually reversed over it in an Icelandic river. I fitted chains on them after that...

Is is front or back guards that are failing?

I've shortened the 4 of them and bolted them back on with ss bolts and nuts; they were far too long.
Between the metal plate and the guards I put an extra rubber plate so it's very thick where it's bolted together.
I'm satisfied for almost 12 years now.

Buy something from Japan what a load of trash
Never had any trouble with my mud flaps been off road green lanes etc sure it's not your driving.
I know the plastic is quite hard you could always make some out of rubber mats.

Defenders are so crap that they're not even cool anymore. Drove one in the military, owned one, watched them being built and tested many..........Heath Robinson himself wouldn't touch one.
There's not even anything TONKA about them. They're all tin-snipped, unfinished, untreated, Friday afternoon bodges.
The only passable examples are Series 111 LWB Safaris in blue with a towbar. And that's with gin and rose tints.

might start a show us your defender thread [/QUOTE]

Seeing as you showed me yours, I thought I ought to show you mine.

This was having its bottom cleaned after the salt and sh!t they put on the roads for all the snow last year.

I do love it, but have to agree the quality is not great, I too popped the rivets on the mud flaps, replaced them with s/s bolts from the back and s/s dome nuts and been fine for the last 2 years.

What do we think of the new Defender for 2017? I hated it at first but it is growing on me a bit.

Bottom line - if you don't understand why we have them, there not for you.

Is it the gin to which you are referring?

I don't understand why you have them and they are certainly not for me.

But if that's what floats your boat (sic) , then that's why we're here.

And that's what was left after you drove it back from the showroom, and they said "they all do that, sir".
