Killer Whales

They just said on TV that there are killer whales around the coast of the UK.

I never knew that.

Just looked on wikipedia, and saw this picture

yes ....been about UK waters for a long time ......we used to have a killer whale that would come alongside our standby boat and the deckhands used to scrub its belly with a deck scrubber.
I have seen allsorts out here ....bats, owls,migrating birds, hawks... ...sharks, whales, seals dolphins ...even the odd cat that gets transported inside drill tubes ......worst was a bloody big spider in our bananas .......regular visits from tagged racing pigeons

a small fishing boat from our club saw one about 10 miles off redcar on the north east coast about 15 years ago ,it followed them along side for about 20 mins and they couldent shake it off which ever way they went scared the skipper that much he crushed the mike on the vhf and wouldent go out in his boat for 2 months , we heard later that they sometimes go after seals around the farne islands.

Yep. Seen several over the years around the Corryvreckan area. Used to try to get close to them in my steel ketch. Think I'd run away from them in my RIB .

A pod of killer whales was spotted in the Firth of Forth, killing and eating seals in January 2007. The Orcas were seen near the Forth Bridge and close to Hound Point. Think there was a photograph circulating at the time - snapped by one of the stand-by boats under the bridge (when they're painting/repairing).

Watched them here ( W of Ireland ) trailing trawlers. It would be interesting if others, given the time and interest, could take a look some distance behind trawls in their area. Say , about a half mile or so. The big ID is the dorsal fin. About 2m height.

Yep,aren't we lucky. We quite regularly see them - absolutely beautiful creatures

just remembered ,the SMALL fishing boat that encountered a killer whale off redcar in the north sea was ironically called ORCA ,he changed the name of the boat after that INCIDENT to PEGASUS dont think he EVER saw one of those though.

I'm with you on that one.......having seen them at seaworld and what they can do, amazing creatures but would not want to be in too small a boat near one.

I wonder if you leant over with a fish if one would come up for a Kiss like they do at seaworld!

I've had a minky circle our 6m rib, port, starboard, bow & stern, then dive under us left, then right, and on its last pass under us, it bumped the bottom of the boat .. after which I put the hammer down Rekon it was about 25ft long.. awesome but frightening experience too
