Jersey short break advice/recommendations

I have just booked some flights to Jersy in mid August for a long weekend to celebrate my wifes 40th. Neither of us have been to Jersey before so I thought I would ask you lot for recommendations of the best place to spend a long weekend. We would like to be by the sea with some nice pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance of the accommodation. In a perfect world a harbour or similar close to hand to wander around looking at the boats etc and maybe even the option of a trip out on the water would be nice. As far as accommodation goes any ideas gratefully recieved as well. We would be looking for B&B in anything from a good quality guesthouse to a decent hotel. Does anyone have any good advice or good experiences to share? I will be away for the weekend so don't be offended if I don't reply to any comments or questions before Monday/Tuesday.

It might have been a better idea to find accommodation before you booked flights, availability will very limited and prices will be shocking! The busiest week of the whole year is the week of the "Battle of Flowers" festival, 14th Aug, usually every bed in Jersey is taken. You can book accommodation centrally on the Jersey Tourism website.

St. Aubin is a small village and has a number of small guest houses, centred round a picturesque harbour with good restaurants and pubs. It's only 3 miles from the capital St. Helier on a good bus route so easy to get around. Can also recommend the railway walk, a 3 mile footpath that leads from St. Aubin up to the well known Corbiere Lighthouse. I might be biased as I was dragged up in St. Aubin but if this sounds good to you I will list some guesthouses in this area when I get a chance.

I stayed here with a group of friends:

http://www.ochhoteljersey.com/

It was okay, though at my time of life now (42) I might look up the food chain a bit.

My brother, Wight Skipper, knows Jersey pretty well. He might chip in with a suggestion.

Haven't been in a few years but The Moorings Hotel and Resturant in Gorey used to be very nice to stay at and good food - not cheap though.

Gorey or St. Aubin gets the up!
Would think st. Aubin would be better if you did not have a car!

Thanks guys very helpful as always, it looks like I know where I need to go now, I will start hunting for something in St Aubin/Gorey.
Martini - I also like the look of the RIB trips and that would be a great way to see some of the island from the water, I am probably missing something obvious on the website but where do these trips run from?

They'll go from St. Helier harbour for sure. Be aware Gorey is a long way from anywhere else unless you want to go see Haute de la Garenne childrens home
But then I do come from an island 9 miles by 5 so my idea of a long way might be different to others

I have to agree with Tony! I have always found Guernsey a much more friendly, more pictureque place to visit than Jersey. IMVVHO

You might as well just go to Spain, half the price and guarenteed sunshine

I will put Guernsey, Alderney and Spain on my to-do list, whoever said that finding somewhere to stay would not be cheap was spot on, I'm going to the Maldives next time it will be cheaper!
