Internet Security

Looking for some directions on online security.

New Laptop and using Mozilla Firefox. Intially I had Norton internet security which is due to expire tomorrow. The laptop came with Mcafee internet security download option which is via a card and 25 digit number.

This number cannot be validated and even Mcafee cant help.

What security would most suggest pls, I can just renew Norton or is another suggestion worth working through

The trouble with Norton is getting rid of it off your machine when you don't want it any more

I've found Kaspersky to be the best one I've used for my home use.
It's easy to use, and seams to work well without being too intrusive.

All of our computers use the free internet security software from microsoft, works great and never had any virus problems.

...Saying that my gaming computer won't even turn on now, I think it's because i downloaded a dodgy pirated movie

I use mailwasher for email and that works really well. It means no email actually goes into your computer unless you aprove it, automaticly blacklists all the 'you have 200m in a offshore account' emails as well.

I hate tempting luck, but here goes:

I "manage" a number of PCs with a large number of users. Without exception, they are a bunch of numpties. To date, I haven't had a virus or similar.

I allow NO external memory devices from other users PCs to be connected to the system.
I keep all the OS software automatically updating.
I keep the Windows firewalls up.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free (previously I used AVG Free).
I (and I think this is the important bit), use an email filter called Postini (from Google). It removes most of the dross and nasties BEFORE my mail client snatches it of the net. This is a cheap service.

So far so good.

Norton - use norton removal tool - google it, the USA government made them write a tool to remove.

I personally use Eset.co.uk , I have it installed about 60 computers no issues... not free but good, effective and low memory usage.

There is a lot that the free edition doesn't cover.

Upgrade to AVG 2012, plenty of cheap licenses on ebay

Or download the free malware bytes

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

I bet a small glass of sherry that something nasty will be found on at least one of your machines.

As said above avoid Norton.

If you bank with Barclays they provide Kaspersky for free!

I think HSBC also provided a free licence for a different brand.

Kaspersky is good as are most of the main products in the market. Main thing is always make sure it is fully up to date at all times. I think you would be unlucky to suffer any issues if using a mainstream product that is up to date.

If you suspect anything, or even as a regular routine for peace of mind download a copy of malwarebytes and run this on your drives.

Have also used Mcafee and Sophos on many PCs and both have done a good job.

another great resource and free is

OpenDNS

create an account and change routers IP you now have content filtering and it will filter bad malicious sites at source.

Ideal for you Willk you choose what to ban! I have have installed it pretty tight at sailing club, but only block what I want at home.

Microsoft Security Essentials...it's written by Microsoft, for Microft Windows machines. It's free. It's not invasive. Can't recommend it enough...used it on multiple machines for friends and family ditching McAfee, Norton and other similar along the way

I use AVG Internet Security 2012 - the paid version. Great thing about it (apart from a total lack of successful virus intrusions, ever) is that you can get multiple licenses for a sensible cost so I have the same thing on three laptops and the desktop. I used to use Norton but it got far too lardy and I would have had to replace this computer about three years ago if I'd continued running it!

Gets a thumbs up here too. Plus next year when you need to renew you can buy a previous years copy on ebay for a knock down price and use the serial number to renew your subscription for another year

I was just about to say that, I reckon it's second only to using a Mac.

Well all I can say is you lot are lucky b*****s!
I have tried loads of spyware and anti-virus programs and I wont say none of them work, but they only appear to work for a bit or only cover some aspects of security.
After 6 months or so I get my address book hacked and messages are sent out in my name to buy viagra or something else. If anyone on here has ever received one of these messages I apologise!
I change or double up on my security and 6 months later.......all over again.
The longest I have gone appears to be about a year by using a combo of Microsoft Defender, Adaware and Spybot.
I have tried changing my passwords sometimes twice in the same event, dropping and resigning for particular apps. Even (saints preserve)-paying for them. I always have automatic update on for the latest version of the program.
Some warning messages from apps. are virtually unintelligable.
For example what does "Add to your ignore list" mean? Does it fix the fault? It doesnt say so. What happens when an item is "on the ignore list" anyway?
Or "Added to PUP exceptions"? Another beauty I get all the time.
Also more than one copy of a firewall either blocks the other, stopping your computer completely, or so slows it down when loading stuff that the machine becomes virtually inopperable.
And, another thing.....................I could go on (and on).

Think I will have to get a Mac (he said in a low voice).

I did, and don't regret it for a minute.

It won't stop your webmail server from being hacked though ... says the voice of experience
