Illicit Methanol in Petrol

Spotted a worrying article in my local rag today - Irish Revenue Inspectors have discovered high levels of methanol (14-18%) in petrol samples taken from local filling stations. This is obviously both illegal and potentially damaging for motors. Living as I do in the Wild Wild West, I'm sure this is the work of ex-paramilitaries so perhaps not of much concern to the Big Islanders - but I bet we see more of it...

Used to be aftermarket kits back in the 70's that would allow you to plumb in a tank of methanol to "enrich" the fuel/air mixture. No idea what the percentage was, but I would guess it wasn't particularly accurate in any case.

I know on some tuned cars you add methanol to the petrol to so you can run higher hp.

Well yes, but that's kinda old hat now. Any number of the local cheapie stations have been caught selling that muck. I suspect that I was running the poor 110 on it for quite some time - she seems ok though.

The Petrol scam struck me as something new and possibly more of a problem for the marine scene.
