Users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer are being urged by experts to switch to a rival until a serious security flaw has been fixed.

The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords, internet experts say.

Microsoft urged people to be vigilant while it investigated and prepared an emergency patch to resolve it.

Internet Explorer is used by the vast majority of the world's computer users.


It's a shame Microsoft have not been able to fix this more quickly

"Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer," said the firm in a security advisory alert about the flaw.

Microsoft says it has detected attacks against IE 7.0 but said the "underlying vulnerability" was present in all versions of the browser.

Other browsers, such as Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, are not vulnerable to the flaw Microsoft has identified.

"In this case, hackers found the hole before Microsoft did," said Rick Ferguson, senior security advisor at Trend Micro. "This is never a good thing."

As many as 10,000 websites have been compromised since the vulnerability was discovered, he said........

I saw the reports on IE7 and I use IE but cannot work out whcih version I have, How do I locate this? I am presently using the free download for Firefox 3 for safety. Cheers Ian

Menu click on help and select 'About Internet Explorer'
Stick with Firefox.

Just as a wee addition to the discussion. I'm using the series 2 version of Firefox. For the past week or so I've regularly been getting invitations to upgrade to v3.0.4. I don't want to so declined them. However, just seconds ago I received an invitation to upgrade series 2 to v2.0.0.19 so it appears that there is still support being developed for the 2 series. There must be enough of us wanting to stick with it. I'm off to check it out now.

Edit: it appears that support is finishing with this release. Firefox 2 info

Edit again: Series 3 is just up to v3.0.5 Here

Yep. I don't like FF3 much. I may try Chrome.

I have been using Chrome for a while without any problems ..............

The biggest pain in the backside with FF3 was getting all the addons to work. Besides that I don't find it much different than 2.
Daughter uses googles Chrome and likes it.

Out of interest what ever happened with the law suit Firefox had against microsoft for them copying Firefox when IE7 came out?

I have all three installed, used Chrome for a while and went back to FF3 as I preferred it - I don't like all this "minimalist" crap. But then I still have Windows XP set to the appearance of the old style menus so I am probably a Luddite

It appears that microsoft have released a security patch for IE now-i picked it up on automatic updates yesterday.

Despite what the Firefox website said, last night I got updated again to v2.0.0.20.
