It was ok when kids had to do something for their random piece of fruit & bonus was you knew someone's mum would have sweets to add to the spoils... Back when you had to sing / dance / do something entertaining for your treats.

"treet ur ahll egg yer windae" is a whole social evolution of our modern times ....
