Horrible smell on The River Medina

Does anyone know the source of the horrendous sewerage smell yesyerday (sat) on the Medina at Cowes, it seemed to start somewhere near to Cowes Yacht Haven up to at least the floating bridge?

Could be something to do with the recent algea bloom in the Solent areas. With colder nights, it will be starting to die and rot, can give off very bad smell

Agree with the above also if seaweed builds up on the Shrape mud bank inside the breakwater that too can rot down and cause a stink

I believe it is the seaweed and mud, you only get it at low tide.
Mercifully you only get the full impact of the smell when you have wind directions from the north to east.

Nick.

By the way Tim, what happened about the "Solent Ribbers meet Isle of Wight"?
And did you enjoy the do saturday?

This smell was I would say definitely sewage- not sure algea blooms smell like that and it was high water and no shallows visible

The farms around Fareham have just recently spread Human muck all over their fields, it smelt awfull and even made the papers.

Could it be this?

Nope.
It has been like that since I moved here, always at low tide, also depends on time of year and wind direction.

It is a partly sulpherous gas given off the shrape at low tide, can be smelt in certain conditions (mainly after a hot day) at low tide with very little onshore wind. Yep, it honks but nothing new. lovely when enjoying lunch in the town!

It is not "red tide" (algae blooms) which have affected the UAE recently for example - they stink too for sure but it is a different smell (more rotting seaweed) and the water goes a red/brown colour. thought to be caused by pollution and too many nitrates getting in to the sea.

have seen and smelt both!
