Halford's Socket Sets

Halfords have a half price sale on some of their socket sets.

I'm sure Nos has one of these and I was really impressed, so fed up of hunting tools I bought one today...

170 Piece Set:

Halfords | Halfords Advanced Professional 170 Piece Socket & Ratchet Spanner Set

120 Piece Set:

Halfords | Halfords Advanced Professional 120 piece Socket Set

I'm sure there are others on the market but these are probably worth a look

I can recommend Halfords Pro range - I use them on both the boats and Land Rovers. Never buy them full price though - as Whisper has found, you can pick them up with a good discount several times a year!

They seem to be very good quality, and a lifetime replacement guarantee.

I have a 30 year old socket set, bought for my 17th birthday by my Mum and Dad. It's seen some abuse over the years and apart from a pin that fell out (never to be seen again) of the flexible universal joint and a broken plastic catch on the lid, it's as good today than it was when it was new.

+1 for Halfords Pro sockets & spanners.

I've read somewhere that they're made by Britool, which if true, explains their high kwalitee.

Ditto... Did a ground up rebuild of a SeriesII after stripping it down and they survived that

Zagato - I bought a new Halfords Pro socket set specially for the Series I that I picked up last year to strip down and restore. But since buying the RIB, my master plan of restoring that over Winter has gone slightly awry... All the body is off, just the bulkhead left - but when I remove that (and the wiring harness), I know it won't move again for quite a while!

lifetime guarantee too. I broke one of my extension pieces, where it narrows to allow misalignment of the socket. Took the broken bit back and it was replaced there and then, no questions, no receipt required. I was very pleased. The only complaint is that the box requires the bit of foam sheet to be in otherwise all the smaller sockets come out of their holes when closed and carried.

As has been said, great kit..... My top tip is to go in and ask for a trade card. Its free and the discounts on some stuff is like sale prices year round .....some stuff is only marginally cheaper, but often batteries, tools etc have huge savings..... IIRC the 150 piece set (we have one on each of the boats) was around the £100 mark on trade card

Quality tools there Whisper, you didn't mention which one you purchased though.

Half price offers, that's one of the best marketing tricks in the book they can afford to over price for a couple of months getting less sales but high profit untill sales dwindle, then they'll half the price to 200% and its profit not greed all the way!!

Now this would be the ultimate test for them, nice project too.

I bought the 170 peice kit for £124 only because the spanners have a ratchet on one end, i was very tempted by the 120 piece set for £79 though but always wanted a set of spanners with ratchets on

Mine's an 80 piece set I think. It's one of the ones that's been discontinued now, but it's got both a good 3/8" and 1/4" drive socket set in which none of the others had at the time.

It's a good bit of kit, but I found it was easier to buy the basic set then buy add-on sets like deep sockets etc as the larger sets were full of useless bits to make the numbers bigger.

i have an older style set, and one of the new style ones, and although im still happy with the set i will say that the quality isnt quite what it once was - mainly in the ratchets. every now and then the new ones (all 3 sizes) will jam up when used on a tight bolt. still good sets though, and the ratchet spanners are ace!
