A photographer's dream? Or is it really difficult to do justice to fireworks?

I love taking pics of fireworks.

Here's a couple I took from gingercoastie's boat during the fireworks display at the end of Falmouth Week. (click for full size image) I didn't have a tripod - but in this case the camera shake actually added a nice effect to the fireworks.

All you need is a mode on your camera that has a couple of second exposure (most modern compact digitals have a night mode or firework mode) - or try just turning the flash off.

Is a tripod a good idea on a boat??? Unless it's a cruise liner the motion of the ocean won't exactly do your pics any good!!!

Movement can add some "mood" to your pics. Set the camera on a long exposure - 1 sec should do - fire away & hope for the best

I stand corrected.

Those are truly beautiful, Roycruse & Brambles (Poetic even ). Having rechecked Slimtim's photo essay there's a great example in there too.

Thanks for the advice also.
So no excuse for us all not to capture the Gunwharf Extravaganza.

Great camera

A little bit of deliberate camera shake can be effective too

Is there anyone going out to watch the fireworks this evening who has a free seat which I could shamelessly occupy - I don't fancy driving my boat back to Calshot in the dark....(and would would rather see the action from the water)

I will donate a bottle of champagne to the crew of said boat!

Thanks Kathleen; my birthday this year was the best ever. Had a suprise party and the drink flowed freely. Jimbo can testify to this (sorry for breaking ur bin)!

I've made a school boy error with regard to the fireworks; I thought they were supposed to be last night (just read friday you see) and assumed they were to do with the Trafalgar celebrations. I now see they are next frida - might go now if I can leave the boat in Pomey overnight.
