'Great White' shark in Cornwall
Does anyone know why they are calling that shark on Sky News etc a Great White?
It looks -and appears to be acting- like a basking shark to me.
Here are a couple of pics I took last summer...

I agree, blatantly a basking shark.
The woman who took the video sold it to the Sun and now they want their money's worth is what it boils down to.

The press always hype things up to the fullest and publishing propaganda is their specialty 
however there is absolutely no reason why great white sharks do not some times visit are waters, the mako shark which is a cousin of the great white have been frequently spotted in our waters, also sea temperatures are well within their tolerance around the UK. 99% of the time its just a case of mistaken identity when people spot a shark (usually a porbeagle) they automatically think great white! the porbi is also a cousin of the great white and they do look slightly similar and so does the mako. Rare marine life thats not known to live in our waters does sometimes show up, like leather back turtles or tuna fish for instance, so with sea temperatures well within their tolerance and an abundance of food like seals the question is why don't we see great whites in our waters and not is there! i suspect the answer is that visits are so rare that they often go unnoticed and usually if one is spotted there's no one around at the time to make a positive identification.

Oh absolutely, I totally accept the argument that white sharks could be in British waters... my comments were based on having seen The Sun's video footage which in this case is a textbook basking shark!

yer cool agreed, typical sun reader mentality read up had to laugh when i read the report, making some guy out to be a hero and saving the girls from the jaws of a massive great white pathetic
even if it was a great white which it wasn't then the chances of being attacked are very minimal, they don't like humans for dinner, usually .
ive spent the last few days surfing in north devon and the sea was full of surfers and even when a shark is spotted (which is rare) it doesn't stop us from getting out there, its not sharks you need to be wary of its certain people

The Sun has a great record of correct fish ID. Apparently this is a 10lb bass.

Don't knock mullet-if you can catch one somewhere sandy without a sewer outfall they taste better than bass.

There are loads of them in Burry Port Harbour and they are pretty big. Don't know if it was a mullet but I was there one evening and a fish jumped out of the water and "ran" across the harbour on it's tail - would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes!!!

I was at a birthday party on Kennack Sands on the Lizard a few days back, lovely day the beach was packed with lots of emits enjoying paddling and swimming in the sea. 
Next thing I know everyone is running out of the water like a scene from Jaws, complete pandemonium, why?
Because there was a small Basking Shark about 40 Meters off shore enjoying a good feed...
I had a good laugh...
Took them a while to get back in...
