I can't tell you to get rid-it's not my place and I don't know the particular car you've got.

What I WILL say is there seem to be an awful lot of shagged 2.3td fronteras around that have good bodywork and fittings.

Mine was worn out at 125000 miles and had been through 2 alternators,a waterpump and oil pump. That's appalling for a diesel.

I have had a bit of experience with lots of these 4wd in the past mainly during the early nineties and then they all without fail suffered with head problems mainly cracking . Was chatting to a mechanic friend yesterday and its pretty much the same story with the later stuff also .
Iam generalising here about turbo diesel engines and iam sure there will be some that are better than others.

I have just looked at a 2.4 petrol Maveric swb or terrano looks really good for the year and money under 2 grand 87000 miles and tidy . I know nothing about this model or the engine , any experiences and what to expect on fuel ?

I had a bloke working for me back in Blighty who had a 2.3TD Frontera. The engine failed on him in a major way and it cost thousands to fix. Personally I'd avoid em like the plague as there are way better 4x4's out there.

The Maverick/Terrano is one of them. Build quality fairly good, 2.7TD is a cracking engine and the 2.4 petrol is pretty bulletproof IMHO. Friend of mine used one to tow his 21ft Fletcher with no probs incl. a trip from Essex to South West Ireland. Fuel economy I think is low 20's which is about par for the course. They are not the best looking of vehicles and the SWB is a bit bouncy/pitchy in ride but they are comfortable enough and I suspect cheap these days. (Being a bit out of touch with the UK used car market these days!)

its cheap enough being a petrol and in my opinion a safer buy at this age . I would have to pay at least a grand more for a diesel and just get maybe 5mpg more and listen to the thing rattle and worry about it breaking down . Plus diesel is costing more than petrol ,

Shit we must be the only country in the world where diesel costs more than petrol .

Nope. Its more expensive that petrol here in Canada too. Leastways in this part it is. Probbaly accounts for the complete absence of diesel vehicles (with honourable exception of VW TDIs and the Jeep Cherokee 2.8TD) apart from monster 6.0L v8 TD trucks.

I got 35mpg out of my 2.3 frontera. I'd be surprised if anyone could get 30mpg out of a petrol one on a run?

I get 31 MPG general running round out of my LWB 2.2 TD.

Probably get more motorway cruising.

Not bad seeing as I have a friend with a petrol Rav 4 that does 25 mpg.
