Electric Anchor Windlass

Has anyone retro fitted an electric anchor windlass to a RIB which would not normally have one ? If so, how did you go about it. If not, has anyone considered the same only to have met obstacles - if so what ? I have what I believe to be a decent and capable anchor roller with plenty of room for a motor in a locker just behind the anchot locker !

MeMe fitting one is so much more than finding a place for the motor
You will need to run ‘big power’ (16A?) cables to the front, you will need a really strong mounting point and even with a fairlead you will probably end up ripping through your tubes just because of the position the winch will be pulling from
Anyway pulling the anchor in is a good way of offsetting the effect of all those deep fried battered Mars Bars

Just been through this one!

Not as easy as it looks for starters. As des said, you need a bl**dy strong anchor point for the winch, then you'll need an extended fairlead so that the anchor doesn't dig into your toobs and worth having extra bow cladding.

Personally after nearly breaking my back the other week as I'd got the anchor wedged in a load of weed and about 20 succesive manouvers trying to dislodge the bl**dy thing........I'm all for anchor winches!!

Have also made sure that everything is in place on the new rib so that I can easily add it at a later date, should I not have any daft mates around when one needs pulling up! (Skippers rules: though boughtest the boat therefore though shalt not lift anchor.....or anything heavy for that matter!)

Dont waste time or money this meme unless you have a medical reason for not pulling up the anchor by hand. These things are heavy and dangerous to fingers. Ive seen some victims here in Dublin . And as posted above it will destroy your tubes at some stage.

Well there goes that.........

........"look what I've got" brag when next anchored up with friends.

Yep - agree with all that above, back to the old fashioned method "love, just pull the anchor in will ya"!!!!!!

Don't forget........

........they also make quite nice sandwiches, the bed, tea, eeerrrr, ironing and all those things hat come before it which involve the only machines in the house we (if I may use the collective) men claim to know nothing about Have you ever heard such a thing, a man who would claim not to know how a machine with moving parts, knobs, lights and noises works ! And they (again the collective - women) believe us - ah that thought alone has cheered me up.

What about attaching an inflatable lifting bag to the anchor, then running a hose side-by-side on you anchor chain (attached by cable ties) down to this lifting bag, and at last having a small compressor in you boat.

This way you will get the anchor up, and you only have to lift it over the tubes. (Could try with helium to see if you could get it to fly into the boat)

As for the "Hey look what I have" thing, then you can just tell all your buddies, hey look is that my anchor floating out there

We do it when diving, but then you have to go down there to inflate it.

although I do have an anchor - have never used the wretched thing..Agree with NIck Hearne on this - you must have real problems to lift 12 m of chain.?? or is it just another gadget? I suppose next you will be talking about dragging the anchor when mooring in a force 10?

While you are at it. what about fitting some wings for lift at the back???
