My Daughter dropped her iPhone 3gs I couldn't believe how cheap and easy it was to repair myself. Bought from eBay, it came with a link to You Tube which showed how to do it and all tools included. Grand cost of about £4.80 and 45mins of work. I doubt a 4s is much more expensive.

Anyone repaired the on/off botton on an iphone 4 before? Mines dead. Bought the tool to take it apart but having had a little poke around I'm too scared to do anything for fear of killing it.

I've done a few repairs on 3G's and 4's, the 4's are a lot harder to work on as you have to go in from the back to replace things like a cracked s teen etc, the the 3's have a seperate Digitizer / LCD but the 4's are all in one.

I replaced a cracked screen on my old iPhone 3gs a while ago. That was immediately followed by replacing the digitiser which I broke in the process.

Getting into the phone is a bit daunting as you have to crack it open, but after that it's not too bad as everything just plugs in.

On balance though I reckon it's worth leaving someone else to deal with the learning curve and next time I took it to a local repairer.

If the phone is in warranty then an Apple Store will probably just swap it out for you, which has the benefit of getting you a new battery. If you've had the phone for a while then it might be worth getting a new battery fitted while you've got it in pieces.
