I suspect millionaire children (this story is a "millionaire pensioner") struggle less than the average teenager! I also said inexperienced not young/kid. Whilst that set of circumstances is hardly common - there's also not an unlimited stream of people with enough money for a yacht, who are seemingly clueless and determined to go to sea without taking advice.

If anyone had bothered to read the article it seems that she is quite experienced:

From what I heard he was aboard the first leg on the Friday and she then stopped overnight, which indicated that people would have been aware it had left its mooring, then she intended to complete the remainder trip herself.

There's obviously a large degree of journalistic licence in this article but it's hard to describe the inside of any 30(ish) year old production 31 foot boat "plush". Which leads me on to the use of the term "millionaire" which is also a claim available now to many more people than back in the days when it "really meant something....."

She (or they) obviously have access to money though (even if through a pawn shop).

In my opinion, a woman with a 150k motor rarely goes out and "splashes out" 30 odd K on a boat. Something smells here. Looks to me like she bought a "tool for the job". Why? I have no idea.

Sad situation anyway.

Apparently the yacht was a wedding gift from her husband. I wouldn't read too much into the 'Royal Navy' trained stuff either. The facts are she was sailing a boat she was unfamiliar with, departing Mousehole Harbour at 6.30pm. Who on earth leaves for a night passage in poor weather single-handedly? Her age and physical ability would have been a contributory factor early on assuming something went wrong and how she'd cope with it.

This excerpt from the Telegraph pretty much sums things up.

Jerry Hobkirk, the owner of Falmouth Yacht Brokers, said he would not have let Mrs Unwin set sail had he known she would ignore his pleas to wait until bad weather had subsided. Mr Hobkirk said: "The weather was treacherous this weekend, even for some of the more experienced sailors. I simply cannot understand what she was thinking when she left the harbour in Mousehole, and against the advice of the sailing school." He said the 130-mile journey from there to Bideford would have tested even experienced sailors, let alone in difficult conditions. "There were strong winds and rough seas on a piece of coast that has very few escape routes. If you get into difficulties there aren't very many ports to play your 'get out of jail' card."

Wedding gift - even so the imbalance is not very plausible to me. Would be like my wife buying me a 30yr old fiesta for a gift. AND apologies to all 30yr old fiesta fans.......

Regardless of whether she was experienced or not I think they have been underlying circumstances.

No one knows what state of mind she was in mentally, if she went to sea with the intention of taking her life I can't hold that against her.
I also wouldn't hold it against her if I was the one sat on a Lifeboat looking for her, its what we're trained to do. We assess the risks before the launch and if we don't like the look of it we won't launch.

People do things for different reasons and we'll probably never know why she did what she did.

There's always that thomas. The thing is that situation is even sadder on so many points.
The risk of the rescue crews. The danger of an unmanned vessel etc., etc.,
Unless she was rescued by another craft that has yet to make itself known.

Surely you'd buy a cheaper yacht then if your doing it for the money ? I just think it was a purchase on a whim, gone wrong! Sometimes the most tragic outcome came be just that without it having to be some kind of scam. Or at least I hope so
