Computer geeks help please.

After clicking on a pop up saying, This page requires "AC Runactive content js." while browsing on here I have had endless problems with getting rid of the following Adware which come up as my main search engine when I turn on my PC.

The first one was mystart incredibar which I got rid of, then Babylon came up in its place along with all the pop ups anyway I now think that I have managed to get rid of it by installing the all singing all dancing McAfee anti virus provided free by my service provider Plusnet. which I have only just found out came with my package

Previously I had been using free AVG and widows defender for protection which has served me well for the last few years. Anyway my question is, can I run this at the same time as windows defender and run both windows fire wall and McAfee at the same time or is it just better running one mainly McAfee and will this stop any other Adware sneaking under the radar that's if I have actually got rid of it in the first place which I think I have.

Thanks k.

Dump McAfee and get Microsoft Security Essentials. Written by the blokes that wrote Windows (!) and runs unobtrusively in the background and is seemless with the rest of the Windows OS. Just keep it updated through the prompts.

Defender is integral with Windows OS. Don't delete that (although you may not be able to anyway).

I never understand why people buy anti virus when Microsoft offer a trouble free solution for nothing and your guaranteed not to get any dodgy sales called from them either.

Kerny, the .js file you refer to is part of getting Flash to run in your browser. I would suggest that the error message you saw is a symptom of the problem rather than the cause.

mmm... By the same thinking nobody would use Firefox / Chrome etc either... I don't understand why you would put all your security eggs in one basket, especially since its the same basket that vast number of others are using and if the hackers / virus writers identify a weakness they will have access to a lot of systems. Obscurity is not a substitute for security but it might just make you a little less vulnerable.

The fact is McAfee is 'bloatware' for your pc .. AVG is fine.. Windows defender is no good

Run IE with add ons disabled or just use FF

Keep your flash player up to date and you shouldnt have any problems.

If you still do remove it and reinstall it

Get Spybot S&D (it's free) and keep the teadtimer running-it'll stop anything adware related being installed by asking you if you want it before it can install.

Running the spybot system check regularly will clear anything nasty that's non-virus related as well.

That incredibar is a rogue search engine that likes to take over the likes of google, bl@@dy thing attatched itself to my Ltop when my boy asked me to download an angry birds extention, so after searching a few pc geek forums I found this link someone had posted which after running speeded my Lt up a good bit.

SlimCleaner 4.0 Free - Community-Powered PC Maintenence

I've since found other sites which claim to remove mystart and others.

Do google search for 'bleeping computer' - see if anything here matches your issue. They often have dedicated help for specific issues that will 100% sort the problem. But you have to follow the steps.

Also check malwarebytes.org and run that.

You only know you got a virus when you suffer the consequences or scan for a virus. Most Mac users don't scan for virus' so are blissfully ignorant whether they have a virus or not.

I'm a Mac and PC owner and have no bias.

Apple drop virus immunity claim for Macs

People have long criticised Apple for making their systems and now their phones too restrictive, but with the exception of a Flash problem, Flash being a very poorly written piece of software, the last virus on a Mac was back in 1999 ish when there was a worm and the only harm it did was to slow the system down every ten minutes.

The old reason people used to use was that not enough people used Macs so there was no point writing viruses for them, but now they have to admit that the system is far too secure and the only was to do it is via a poor third party plug in.

Microsoft Security Essentials is very unobtrusive. I run it on around 15 PCs and to date have not had a problem. I would say, however, that most problems I see come from downloads - people putting stuff on their PCs that they don't fully understand or need. In a moment of inattention, I recently missed some opt-out box and got a pile of cr@p I didn't want - and that was from a mainstream supplier.

Kerny, IIWY, I'd use System Restore (Recovery in the Control Panel) to wind back the OS to a date when it was working. After that, the PC will reinstall any missing updates. Just make sure you get Flash (minus any extra cr@p) and take it from there. You'll be 17 days younger too....
