The odd thing is that they could have used the same approach to design a 'proper' hull shape, cover it in fibreglass and have something with a bit of stability and with a keel.
I'd love to know whether the glue they used was waterproof...

The boat didn't sink... they just need a better propulsion system!
Oh and some lifejackets (one of them couldn't even swim!). Oh and some means of calling for help...

I remember building a "boat" from a polystyrene tray that was powered by Alka-Seltzer as part of a physics experiment once...

Our forefathers just 60-70 years ago were making boats from two sheets of plywood, some plans obtained from a newspaper/magazine and glue that by modern standards we wouldn't say was waterproof and some very basic hand tools.
They then sailed them, often with their kids, with no training, no VHF, no mobile phone, no life jacket. They got away with it. They are seen as pioneers.
Today someone builds a more buoyant craft. The OAR breaks not the boat. Foolhardy ... Probably. Pioneering...? You never know ask in 60 years.
