Chopper ditching

Just seen on the news about the Super Puma ditching in the North Sea. Can't believe how lucky them lads and lasses are. Everyone survived.

Just beat me to it!!!

Yes they were very lucky - and in the dark as well - miracle they didn't lose anyone. I see most were recoverd by the platform lifeboat - probably a RIB or similar foam collared boat.

Looks like it was a BP platform.
The lifeboats on board the platform are like the ones on ships, totally enclosed and displacement.

Reading about it the cloud base was BELOW the helideck level.

indeed according to the coastguard the 15 that weren't winched into the rescue heli - were picked up by one of those massive Delta ribs - the ARRCs!

Them big Deltas are part of BP's Jig Saw program.
Would make sense if it was one of them.

The helicopter picked up the first 3 survivors, the rest were picked up by one of the two ARRCs in attendance. Apparently, the three on the helicopter were then transferred back onto the ARRCs. A real success for the Jigsaw project and the ARRCs

odd that they would then fly those three back to Aberdeen and bring the rest by boat? the Scottish media suggested that the first three were airlifted then the winching operation became difficult/dangerous and since there were no serious injuries the remainder were recovered by the ARRCs

Was the heicopters safety systems specified by the jigsaw project cos that seemed to work very well also

Did they just deploy the ARCC's as everyone was in a liferaft or were the victims spread about in the Sea in which case did they launch the ERRV's FRC's as well.

sorry

ERRV means Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel
http://www.errva.org.uk/life.php
Every platform or group of platforms in a close vicinity will have a dedicated ERRV so no need for the rig to have it's own open boat cos they jump from the ERRV.

FRC means Fast Rescue Craft Used to be Searider 6's with twins or Delta's now moving towards hard tube diesels with jets for safety. Check out Norsafe or Delta

ARCC Means BP got a lot of money some of which it gave to Delta for some pretty fancy RIBS

ARRC -Autonomous Rescue and Recovery Craft

At the time of build (and now I believe) the ARRC is the smallest vessel in the world to be designated as fully autonomous.

So is the ERRV on the water 24 hours a day ?

And 100% automated ! WOW - out there in that sea - with all that big metal stuff sticking up ! Surely it does actually have people on it though? Can it be remotely operated then if they all fall out ?

Can you tell I know nothing about this stuff but find it very interesting ?

yep ...I was HLO last monday and turned the flight back ...oddly ....the millar platform where the jigsaw chopper is parked (bond 1) got a flight in and they are only 8 miles from us.....I came home late last tuesday and the cloud base wasn't much better
been on the jigsaw chopper a few times ....very well equiped and the pilots are normally 20 years north sea flying experiance ....
re-fuelled 4 navy sea kings last trip ....they are doing a lot of excercises in bergen ....that is a cracker of a chopper....makes the puma look tottie.

56C went down in 95 ...with everyone rescued ....you'll see it on discovery every so often.....best landing on water ever....didnt even get feet wet when transfering to liferaft, the oil co tried to hide everyone in a hotel away from the media but they sent a girl to marks and spencers to buy clothes for everyone but came back with yellow jumpers and rupert bear trousers so they were quite easy to spot.

...And before that they were 5m Humbers, fitted out by Delta with (I believe) a single Yam 40 on the transom! (which is probably why most were retired in the early 80s.....)

ERRV is also known as a stanby vessel and it is permanently on station, but it's not automatic at all I'm unsure as to how you thought that? . It would have a dynamic positioning system facility but that's about it.

They have around 12 crew Master, Mate, Engineer, 2nd engineer, medic, cook (who would double as a crewman in an emergency. and 6 crewmen who woul be a Coxswain and 2 boatmen for each of the two ribs the crewman would also be AB's andwork on the ship.

Some are converted deep sea trawlers and some are custom built ships check out Grampian shipping (might be Northstar) or Vroon

Didn't one of the trawler/guard vessels sink a while back? Can't remember it's name.
