I asked him that myself, and to a degree yes he replied, all containers need booking in to port firstly, where they should/will have papers, detailing content's, pretty much like when sending things through the post, obviously there are known and trusted companies that regularly ship bulk, and probably pass inspection quicker than others, so after all containers are checked, he's presented with a general description with weight, special attention is given with some containers of course.

...and did he load that one? I dunno he's based in London at tmo I think.

MAERSK advertise the breakdown of cargo on their Asia-Europe route into the following categories:-

20% kitchen goods/appliances
15% furniture
10% textiles& clothing
10% vehicles and vehicle parts
5% toys and games
40% misc goods (anything from house contents to private goods to liquids and everything in between)

Insured value of a 10,000teu (20ft container) containerised cargo generally in the region of 250-300 million USD (but obviously varies considerably)- I have heard stories of 40ft boxes insured at well over a million (computer chips etc).

This is a big week for container shipping. maresk have just taken delivery of the worlds largest ship Maersk McKinney-Moller is now the worlds largest ship, 18,000teu (20ft containers) Impressive dimensions of 400meters x 59mtrs and 43000hp propels her at upto 23kts. So confident in this Asia Europe market they have ordered 20 of these Triple E ships- economy of scale. They offer a daily container service from Asia to china - scary!

MOL Comfort on the other hand not a good news story- not only should a 4 year old ship not break in two in moderately bad weather, but to make it more of a salvage nightmare half sunk 2 days later (the stern)and the other half is now on fire (bow)-nightmare! Scary for the industry is that there are loads of container vessels of that size, many a lot older, and though a large ship- not large by the scale of the newest box boats!

Personally I think cows and swamps are more responsible but that's a different thing!
