Speed is all about your connection to the local phone hub. Depending on your exchange setup (copper wire, to optical) and distance you will get the same max possible speed from all suppliers (unless you use a service that uses its own wires).

you can check you max speed here Linky

The whole "up to xx" is a bad marketing ploy. "in some areas of the country if you have the best IT gear and pay the most you can get xx speed" is more like it.

You'll never get data any faster than the server you're hitting will send it. That's the limiting factor on most transfers.

i live right at the end of the road so to speak, miles from town.
my connection speed is crap!
i'm suposed to have up to 8mb but on a very good day i only get 2mb
changing provider has never made any difference.
if your internet is coming through your phone line then talk to your neighbours,
find out what speed there getting and with who as local coverage is what makes the difference not provider!
you'll probably find your all in the same boat

Servers are faster than thin "pipes"
unless your servers are from the '70's

Paul I can't give you a definitive answer - but within our town the speed is on BT based connections is sold at "up to 8 Mbps" which as with most places means "around 2 Mbps for most people" all my friends over a 2-3 mile radius and our old office experienced the same. We moved in to a new office recently (within the same area) and it is serviced by Virgin and delivers 20 Mbps - it is on a serious business connection so I don't know if someone in a house along the street would get the same. I think Virigin's marketing suggests that unlike BT based connections their 20 Mbps means 20 - not upto 20.

Zen have just regraded me to ADSL2+ (for free ) which should be 20 meg and I am seeing 15 meg down load, which is about right given my distance from the exchange (usually the limiting factor on copper networks) and pretty good for overhead copper as opposed to optical

Watch out for virgin though .. if you do a lot of downloading you will get 'traffic shaped' which limits your bandwith if you are a heavy user , and will slow you down

In my West Highland Bolt hole I get 512K .. but hey .. thats better than not being connected to the cyberworld

Think of all those posts Willk would get away with if I couldnt get online?

It was bound to happen, especially as you set the bar so low

I always liked: "It's not how deep you fish the river - it's how well you wiggle your worm"

It's all bollocks of course - women love a big wotsit
