To my knowledge, nothing has changed apart from the telegraph pole outside our house (with lines to about 6 houses) being changed - but ever since that day, we have suffered with these very low speed issues. Is anyone aware of pole top wiring changes which could cause the exchange max speed to be lowered (otherwise I'm struggling to work out what is going on) ?
Yes .. connections from overheads always deteriorate over time,(well I suppose most do but these in particular) I've had 18 meg from a pole connected line (about as fast as can be got here with such a connection). Periodically it deteriorates, currently Ive been at 10 meg for a few months with a couple of 2 meg blips

Eventually , usually about christmas it goes tits up and I have to go through the utter PITA of getting my ISP to fight with BT to sort it .. all blame me and my kit and threaten to charge but they never do because its always BT's problem.

The software in the exchange adjusts the speed of the line to maintain a stable connection, thats why you should always leave your router on, otherwise it thinks the line is unstable and lowers your BRAS profile and your subsequent connection speed.

I keep telling them Ive had the same isp (zen) who are excellent and the same router for 4 years .. I mean how can you pump 18 meg down an infrastructure thats been there since the second world war

I meant to say .. the good thing about using speedtest.net above is that it saves all your speed checks, so you can prove to your isp that youve been going steadily down hill. The trick is to start complaining when its still got about a third of the speed left in it, otherwise before you know it .. your speed ends up being lower than the tip of a snakes cock then the kids flay you alive cos they cant get bookface or play eggbox and shout abuse at their mates

Interesting that speedtest seems to think you're less than 50 miles from London. I realise the internet has 'shrunk' the world, but I didn't think it was by that much
