Don't be. Renaming goes back at least a few thousand years. The Romans and other civilizations renamed and used captured. Would have been quite insane to have sunk them considering all the time, labor and expense to build a ship back then.
There are many boat de-naming and re-naming ceremonies that can be copied off the web.
