Blackberry Storm

Using Nokia N95 8GB and thought it to be pretty resonable , tried the N96 and handed it back within a week .... In the interim, before Apple gets 32GB and Java and seeing as I have the company account with Vodaphone, I thought I'd give one of these fellas a go ,.. anyone else been tempted, and what do you think ?

Save me carrying an ipod about too .. the N96 would do 32 GB if expanded with a micro sd, but I just couldnt wait for the damn thing to work

if you are on Orange get the HTC touch HD - it's basically an Ipaq the same size as an Iphone but with a bigger screen - can run tom tom etc and all sorts of pocket pc apps.

It's what I am about to get.

I thought the N96 was a reasonable mobile, what problems did you have?

Its as slow as a week in the jail , its processor is a slower one than the N95 that it replaced ... and it runs more apps Plus its keyboard(s) is tacky, and nowhere near as positive as the N95 8GB I thought. Plus mine had some software bugs, one of which was that the ringer wouldnt always ring Just what you want eh ?, my provider wanted £200 off me to change to it too,.. now they are giving em away on contract I see

Thanks for the info Andy .. looks like the apple boys are worried .. cant say I can make a fair comparison, cos I've only ever played with an iphone and never used it in anger .. if you know what I mean.. but I have to say .. this Storm feels good, I have a week yet to hand it back if I dont like it, but I've customised it nicely, the screen .. which I thought would be an issue with my big fingers .. as I am a large height person !! works very well .. memory is small though, but it has some diamond features, one of which is that you can set it to auto switch on and off, so you dont get bothered with out of hours shit and it conserves your battery therefor ! ...that I like, and so simple I was an 'always on' phone person just for convenience, but not now.

Storm

On a cool wall, it's ice cold.

Yeah, I'm tempted!

using an HTC kaiser aka TyTn II and its painful, RF reception is pants compaired to a nokia and wife hates it and the phone software is a pest.
Tom Tom with the inbuilt GPS isn't too bad.

The touch HD has a bigger screen but the most important thing of all is the range of apps it will run - tom tom but best of all Memory map so I can use OS maps - I can even use nautical charts and aviation charts - doubt you can do that with a crackberry.

Reception is supposed to be a lot better on the touch HD but on Orange that isn't saying much!!!

I wouldnt touch anything with windows mobile on it, its bollocks, slow and crashes. Symbian is the one .. The storm is a little slower than I was hoping for, but its other features redeem that somewhat, the question is,.. is it enough, and will it let me down , in that say, I can call up a number whilst on the go for example, or store a spoken number whilst in a call, then dial it ,... that sort of stuff .

HTC make ok hardware, a lot of the big players badge it, like Orange, but because of the o/s , the few I've tried were a let down, and blue tooth implementation patchy to say the least.

The Storms touch and press screen is actually great for someone who is active, and stops false presses by needing a dual action to initiate a command, so I've read of some who complain about this type of screen but for me its actually a damn good plus Also, web browsing is a treat, for once , this is not a fiddly viewing experience like any other mobile ive had N95 included, its big screen has an excellent cursor system where you use your finger just like a mouse and then press to click an object,.. that has transformed web surfing for a phone and something I've never read yet in any review !

That said it wont take a click instruction a couple of times which is annoying sometimes, although rarely, I think its the software trying to decide which sector your finger is on that causes that.

Yes .. it can happen (note my sardonic tone ) Although Symbian os's run quick, they can get bogged by too many apps too, the N96 is a classic example (together with its slow processor).. its got to be a balance .. but.. on that balance, I've found a well run Symbian based phone is the fastest of them all.. windows mobile will never beat it IMO.
