big wasp

this fought a spider in my workshop today and lost .....looks like a big wasp but not sure ....any ideas? 51mm long with a 10mm long sting
never seen anything like it

Tricky to tell from the pic, but from the size, it sounds like a Wood Wasp, the "sting" would therefore be an ovipositor (for introducing eggs into other insect larva/grubs in old wood). It's harmless, as the encounter with the spider demonstrated. Now, the spider must have been quite something!

Found one of them in my workshop 2 weeks ago in the West Highlands,.. went to get my daughters bug catcher to show it to her but it had gone,.. looked like a wood wasp, or hornet tail

I actually caught one a couple of years ago that was bigger fatter , rounder but similar colours except it was orange bands not yellow but it was a good 3 inches long with the most evil looking sting in its tail.. which isnt .. I caught it in a glass sweetie jar.. it looked jiggered though .. thankfully

looking at the picture in the link it looks the same ...glad its harmless .....never really seen one before and the noise it made before it pegged it was unreal ....quite a size compared to a normal wasp.

bigmuz ....what happened to your northcraft? is it gone
