Big cat sightings in the UK.
Has anyone seen one or know of anyone who has, are sightings such as the beast of Bodmin fact or fiction... your thoughts.

Don't know about the Big Black Pathers..ie Leopards.. BUT! I can definitely confirm the SMALLER varietys DO exist Mate!..I saw (without doubt) a North American Lynx (The smallish one with Tufts on its ears).. early one morning after a Deer Stalking session at a place near me.. 'West Hatch' only 50-100 yrds away.. watched it amble along a Hedge totally unconcerned,and through through the Bino's...having Packed my Rifle in the Boot already! 
talking later to the farmer he's seen them..yes them! plenty of times! So many Roe Deer around..and Dence cover living well would be no problem! My friend now shoots the same Farm and has seen loads of Tracks,but no sightings of late.
Oh and its NOT A CIDER FARM!

At 2am, on a midweek overnight parts run for Renault when their warehouse was in Swindon. 2 of us in the cab saw what I'm pretty sure now was a cougar for 2 consecutive days. It was VERY big, and didn't look at all bothered by the truck.

Big Cats
Certainly they are around. Having said that, a lot of sightings are of large domestics cats in open terrain where the observer has difficulty establishing scale.
I know one RIBnetter who has shot a Jaguarundi that was on the loose in the British Isles for many weeks, if not months. It's all a bit hush hush but I'm quite happy that it happened.
A second story, a friend of mine in Northern Ireland was walking through brush near his home (in a VERY isolated tree filled valley). As he approached a bush along his route, a deep growl emanated from it. He stopped, the growling increased. He engaged full astern and the bush calmed down. No sighting.

There are two local creatures I am afraid of...first is the Great White Shark that happens to frequent our local dive waters, and the second are the mountain lions that also happen to frequent our local dive sites, just on the land side. They are both majestic creatures that deserve respect, and occasionally decide to take a taste of a person, but we are not their prey. Fortunately they are both protected and can not be harmed.
The hill, behind the house I grew up in, has the main ridge road aptly named, "Big Cat Trail". They are sometimes spotted in the area, and are well feed with all the deer and other creatures that abound.

There are a couple of organisations that track big cat sightings in Sussex and place trailcams in woods.

Back to reality  yes I've seen a "big cat" dunno what it was, but it weren't a domestic pussy cat. I had to stop & let it stroll across the road in front of me one morning around 6am on the Stocksbridge by pass (A616) I called in at the local nick & reported it & the Bobby on duty (yes a real copper in a real police station, how quaint) His reply was "Oh aye! we know about that, it's been reported loads of times, thanks anyway"  The beast I saw was about the size of a large dog & mousy blond in colour with a long tail.

The interesting thing is that like you pikey ,nearly all of the reported sightings mention the very long tail.

This was the largest Bobcat I have ever seen and was about the size of a Labrador dog. (Our Mountain Lions get far bigger.) The bears get even bigger but are less of a threat than a big cat.

That ^ is in the South of San Francisco area. I live North of the Bay and we have similar signs around our parks, but they look like this.
Taken at our local mountain biking spot Annadel State Park.
Why would anyone call in a cat sighting? They are a fairly common animal around here, and have been seen since the beginning of human settlement here.

Over years of travelling through less deprived parts of the globe, I have had great difficulty convincing others of just how benign the, ahem, islands comprising Great Britain and Ireland are. You can wander into the woods (if you can find any) and lay down and the worst thing that can happen to you fauna wise is a few midge or tick bites. Ireland is the most benign of them all (no snakes). Our countryside is harmless.

Our ticks can carry Lyme disease (My neighbor got it), and we have lots of Rattle Snakes. Stay away from California as EVERYTHING wants to eat or bite you
I keep getting stung by the dang yellow jackets. Fortunately we have a skunk that has been cleaning their nests out.
