Best Fish & Chips

Following on from Black Pig's thread about the best crab sandwich, what would Ribnetters vote for the best value i.e. quality and price - take-away fish & chips establishment?

In order of preference:

1. The chipper (on the quay) in Mallaig.
2. Morton's (on the quay) in Ballycastle.
3. The Salt n' Batter (almost on the quay) in Rathmullan.

The question is, does the proximity to a quay wall improve the taste of fish and chips?

Ferk dat! F&Cs in Looe are a suicide mission. The shite hawks there are brutal.

We are blessed here in Fal. Rick Stein hopped coasts and opened up his 2nd F&C shop here a few years back. The locals then upped their game to a point where Steiny Boy has struggled. The fact that Stein's appear to be always promoting 'special offers' is an indication that trade isn't what they'd hoped for. The Padstein magic hasn't travelled so well.

1) Mortons Ballycastle
2) Not sure of name - but it's just outside North Shields Fish Quay
3) spice island, Portsmouth Camber (not strictly a take away but they come wrapped in paper and you can eat outside)

Stubbington Fish and Chips, luckily just down the road from me and voted number 1 by the people in a competition. Prices went up right after

Fish - Pat and Tush's fishermans rolls cooked in front of you (fillets of flat fish in a huge iron pan full of olive oil) in the open on the Stade at Hastings, £2.50 a pop and the best fast food you'll get - and chips from the chippy opposite.

His chippy in Falmouth isn't a patch on the one in Padstow.

Very interesting this thread. One establishment has been nominated at which I had probably the WORST fish and chips I've tasted in the last 5 years!

Really? I've eaten at both. Why the difference in your opinion?

Our local (TJ's) in Lilliput, Poole is pretty good, but my best ever must have been at the end of the commercial quay in Troon, when I delivered a yacht there a couple of years ago. Must have been a 30-40 min wait for take away, but well worth the effort.

Doesn't Mr S want c.£11-12 per portion? It would put his establishments well outside of my definition of "value"

By coincidence we had some great freshly cooked fish and chips from Simply Fish in Brixham yesterday - albeit sitting in the car in horizontal rain and no visibility - an August BH requirement.

Adult portions £6.25, children's £3.95 - filled us up with chips to spare
