You guys don't have the crab season in the middle of winter there. You also haven't been greedy enough to drive the industry to these ridiculous states. It's a dangerous industry, but primarily because they are so driven by money so much that they make it necessary to operate that way.
The "danger" came from having a strict harvest quota for crab - when that quota was met, everyone stopped fishing. That meant the guys went out at the opening, and fished 'til the quota was met.
The risk has been somewhat mitigated by going to a per-vessel quota - each vessel now has its own limit to catch, so you don't have the rush to get it done; meaning the boats can take shelter from the weather to some degree, without having to be out there trying to grab their share of the catch.
The season is till short enough, though, that some bad-weather fishing is still going to occur. Not really a job I would want to do.
