Arty waste of money or a clever scam?

I can never work out wether these artists are mad or really clever? I suspect the latter.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6075450.stm

This bloke has just had a grant of £50k to have an art exhibition - with nothing in it!!! Yup it's an empty room!!!

There are people starving in this world - even more important you could buy a good RIB!!!

And whilst on the subject they are going to remove those dangerous stupid statues from the sea.

The first one I agree with, I bet he can't believe his luck, £50k for an empty room!!!

The second one I am afraid I don't agree with. The whole "people will need rescuing" (like those three girls) is a bit spurious as people always need rescuing from locations like that anyway*. If the statues generate higher incident rates then perhaps it's an issue but we're some way off finding out whether that's the case.

* It's a bit like the calls to ban the London to Brighton bike ride and Great North Run because there have been casualties on each event every time they are held. Statistically the same number of deaths would have occured had the same number of people sat in their armchairs for the duration!

The local surfers seem to think they are dangerous - I wouldn't fancy hitting them in a boat either!!!

I quite like art-type things (even including some of the wackier stuff at Tate Modern) but this really takes the p1ss.

Quote:
"If you read the comments in the visitors' book, even people I wouldn't expect to understand the full context have got a lot out of it."
- from the 'artist' - pretentious b*ll*cks.

In fairness, it does say 'a portion of £50,000 funding'

Perhaps he couldn't come up with enough work to fill the gallery and thought sod it, let's just tell them to imagine some? Emperor's new clothes most definitely come to mind here!

Mind you, I could do with some extra space. If I crossed this and the Tate one with all the boxes, perhaps I could get an Arts Council grant for a new unit Could even charge admission for people to come and look at a load of brown boxes.
