Did he work with the stuff a lot? I take it he had mesothelioma which my Grandfather died from - he used to work on boiler lagging etc - tearing out huge chunks of the stuff. He also smoked heavily which apparently increses the risks by 50%.

Why? I know full well what it's like to lose loved ones - in fact most of my family!!!

Obviously people have died from exposure to asbestos - I am not disputing that. I just think it should be put into perspective that's all. Same as many people die from smoking - doesn't mean you wear a gas mask when you go into a smokers home.

Problem solved.........

I had a 1940's house 7 years ago & all the wall's & ceiling's where artexed! bloody awfull looking!!!!!! got a plaster around & he said go strait over the lot with ordinary plaster as the stipple effect of artex act's as a good key anyway (even if it is painted as some of mine where), which he did & it looked great. We decorated & sold the house 3 years later & the plaster was still fine, no shrinkage crack's or any other prob's so i would go for that if i where you (by far the cheapest option), only cost me 800 for 6 good sized rooms wall's & ceiling's complete inc material's!
P.S.
Those plaster's are a mess bunch (mess go's with the trade) so make sure you put down plastic sheeting over anything you dont want plastering!
Mike.

Are you trying to say that you've worked for more than 8 years?
