If your seriously interested in a phantom Quad then there are plenty of good second hand ones around for about 350.
People seem to get fed up with being told where and when they can or can't fly them and sell up!

They are easy to fly, but you "will" crash it more than once
so a second hand one might be a good place to start.

If you do buy one second hand make sure you get the seller to plug it into his computer so that you can see it has no faults.

He will know how to do this and if he says no then like all things just walk away.

Look for signs of abuse, rough landings and so on.
These things can take a fare bit of abuse but eventually they go out of calibration.
This can all be sorted and parts are readily available.

Get the seller to put a battery in it and let it cycle through it's warm up procedure.
If you have space get him to take off and let the thing hover.
In GPS mode it should hover in place. Within a few feet.

These plenty of help out there if you do get a problem.
I myself had a compass go bad with near disastrous consequences!

I don't normally favour extra/tighter legislation, but in this case, rightly so, I think. Too many potential privacy, security and safety problems for my liking.

Some of the existing rules are already adequate; if I remember rightly, you have to be something like 50m from the nearest building outside your control and 50m from the nearest people. But I'd like a lower weight limit (maybe a couple of kilograms). 20kg moving at 10mph would be like being hit with an angry, buzzing sack of cement with propellers. Maybe an installed power limit, but that's already starting to feel a little too bureaucratic for me. Maybe restrictions on the use of cameras on them, but I don't know how you'd do that without it being excessively bureaucratic either.

Thing is, though, I like the idea of model aircraft, which get far beyond a couple of kilos, and don't much care for quadcopters with cameras... and then I start to disagree with myself.

personally i think if there are going to be any restrictions, then it should be to do with fpv where the operator watches on a screen what the camera sees. that is where any kind of threat is likely to be i think. there are already rules about the drone staying within sight but of course if people can extend ranges then they arent going to be bothered about the rules. pretty hard flying something you cant see if you dont have a video screen.

Neither do I, & I'm certainly not advocating it, but if people keep taking the p1ss, the " something must be done" brigade will get their teeth into it, & that'll be the end of it. "It" being the relative freedom to fly quad copters & such like with few restrictions, if people keep on pushing the envelope, those freedoms will be taken away, either on elf 'n safety or security grounds.
