For those using AVG, have a look at this.. No way would I protect my pc with AV software that only detects 83% of viruses.. If your gonna be a cheapskate,

get something that works..

I believe that no single virus scanner will ever catch 100% or keep you fully protected. The proper solution is different companies scanners on the servers and PC's that you use so emails and such have to go through several different products before they get to you.

I also never make recommendations any more as if that person then gets a virus then it's somehow my fault as I told them to install that software (even if they haven't updated for over 6 months!!)

If you want 100% total protection never use the PC

Reviews can sometimes be misleading. There are plenty out there that think AVG is brilliant.

In the REAL world we have found AVG to be better than AV packages that cost a lot of money.

Just because X detects 99% and Y only detects 80% doesn't really mean much if X hijacks your computer and makes it run like a bag of shit!!!

As with anything else don't just look at numbers. It is like someone who goes to Argos and buys a pair of 20-100 x 50 binoculars - they MUST be better than a pair of 7x50s!!!

They sell computers and digi camera the same - ah but it has a 3.2ghz CPU or it's 8mp - meaningless if it's got crap on board graphics or a shit lens.

Oh dear - im affraid im with codprawn on this one - I hate it when that happens

I always put AVG Free on all my PCs and all my freinds PCs - not had a problem yet.

It is also amazing how much a healthy dose of common sense will protect your machine better than any virus software. If it sounds too good to be true - it is - dont open it - delete it. If you get popup windows appearing when you land on your favourite porn or cracks site - close them - dont carry on and click them thinking your going to get something for nothing etc etc etc etc... ... ... ...

Viruses thrive on idiots.

AVG have a free, and paid for version.. Not sure how the free version can be as good as the one you pay for.. Which would mean that ones better than the other..

When it comes to virus protection, I wouldn't have something made by a company thats inferior to another one of their products.. It's like the old adage, you get what you pay for..

I agree reviews can be misleading, but when you have a review saying summats crap, by a company with no axe to grind, you have to wonder why they don't rate it..

Lots are quick to slam Norton, but having used it from day one as my AV, and not had a single virus, it can't be that bad..

Why spend £1000+ on a pc, and then sod all protecting it?

AVG free and the paid for version offer the same level of protection. Where they differ is in use over networks - customs scans etc. The basic product is the same - and you get very regular updates as well.

Norton may be secure but it messes with machines too much and is almost as bad as some spyware in the info it gathers!!!

I also use AVG free at home & find it very good.

We have now bought their system for our office pcs & again have had no problems. More than can be said for Norton or McCaffey.

we use AVG commercial version on server at work - and have no complaints at all - to our knowledge we have never had a successful virus infiltration; but we do get many attempts. We check machines periodically with Panda (particularly when beaving strangely which is usually spyware).

I use the free version at home and other than not supporting networks and servers the main difference is they don't provide free technical support.

Ok so I've decided to ditch Norton and use avg how easy is it to uninstall norton completely from my pc. Does last year's advice still stand or is there any thing else. I understand from some mates that it can be a pig to remove completely.

Get F-Secure. Has been rated one of the best AV and firewall programs out there, and i wont go back to anything else now ive been using it. I run it on all my machine and also run the server version. Its cheap as well. Came out very well in a recent review of PC Pro, much better than AVG and Nod 32.

Sometimes the uninstaller works - sometimes it doesn't. make sure you have no other progs running and good luck.

Had a bitch of a job yesterday - machine badly infected with spyware but Norton was causing more trouble than anything else - removed Norton and a massive improvement - caused more trouble than the spyware!!!

We still use AVG and it's brilliant and free - we have NEVER had a virus get through with AVG - it doesn't slow the machine down and it's free - F secure may be good but if it ain't free why bother?

The only thing that lets AVG down at the moment is it's anti spam on server versions - that should be sorted soon!!!

doesn't this slow a pc down pretty much the same way as Norton?

I've tried Panda, Norton, AVG and had problems with all. I installed F-Secure a year ago and love it! It's user friendly and sits in the background doing it's job.

agree with COD - but being correct brought the AVGPRO 7.5 version
( i thought they stopped the free version!!)

its not the fastest scanner - but seems to pick everything up

... with the same license number for each one?. pretty cool- no wonder people go bankrupt. Don't have an account with Northern Rock by any chance ?
