The world we live in

the trouble is that many countries and cultures view life and the value of life and animals in a different way to us.

I have heard before that they use all sorts of animals for bait for big game fishing which is difficult for us to understand and come to terms with as this thread has shown.

Dont get me wrong, i dont agree with it all but in some parts of the world life is cheap and that is a very very sad situation for both animals, children and adults alike.

i cant imagine using my dog "Ron" as bait, very distressing indeed

So very true - if some countries can't even value human life how can they be expected to value life in the animal kingdom???

It's not so much the low price of life that distresses me, it's the willingness to make another animal (it's all we are after all) suffer so much. fishing hooks through paws/legs/mouths of integent animals! and in those pics, they certainly don't all appear to be mangey strays either! and some are just pups.

I'm appalled by the whole thing.

We'll I knew this family that went out to a Pacific Island with the husbands job, they took all there belongings for a long stay and put their dog in quarantine. 6 months passed and they where re-united with their dog only to have it go missing 2 days later. They managed to find out what happened to it......It had gone into a hot pot for the locals to feast on. No law had been broken as it stipulated that any dogs off of their leads where fair game, just because the Dog was taken from their land meant nothing.

I've also been to China and seen Dog on the menu.

I think we all need to realise that our perseption of right and wrong is right for our community and that in other area's of the world things are different.

I, like all of you hate these things but it does happen and will happen.

This is a very distressing thread. It also behoves us to recognise that dogs are hung by the neck and beaten to death in Korea (their terror tenderises the meat...) and cats are skinned alive in China (don't ask...) Additionally horses are eaten in France.

I suspect that, unless you are a vegetarian, there's a certain ethical allowance for the slaughter of recognised "food" species, but distaste at "pets" and "intelligent" animals being consumed, or used as bait.

Personally, having witnessed animal slaughter in both the "civilised" West and "savage" East I find little to distinguish one from the other. Dead is dead, and "humane" is a convenient conceit in most cases.

As a direct result of things I've seen, I haven't eaten animal flesh for over twenty years. Might I suggest that this is as good a place to start as any other if animal welfare is a concern?

Its going on on your own doorstep, every Boxing day people around the world are appauled at the tv pictures of the barbaric spectacle of hunters killing foxes with dogs, equally as sickening as these dogs being abused, so its not just so called third world, or less civilased people
even after the ban we saw Toffs hunting with a loophole, and travelling to France to do the killing there

Mindless

Olly I agree mate it's appalling and should be stopped.I've signed the petition.

I'll never understand why some people on this forum feel the need to question everything to destruction and spout endless hot air about it rather than do the research and form an informed opinion.

The French might eat horses but they also burn live British sheep... I wouldn't expect their government to do a lot.

Personally I won't eat anything I wouldn't kill myself.
