Had indeed that patch been ice free, he would have dived under the remaining ice and been trapped underneath. Better a sore head than dead.

I was at a party once at the house of a freind who had a pool, a girl dived in not realising the depth was quit shallow and broke her neck. In a wheel chair for the rest of her life now.
