Unfortunately coppers don't use much discretion these days - if they did old men wouldn't be arrested for letting their dog foul a pavement and children wouldn't be arrested for chasing another child with a waterpistol.

And these are just a tiny example of a very worrying trend........

Do you have a link to the child being arrested?
Why shouldn't the old man be arrested? Whats the problem here, the fact he's old? His dog shat on the pavement, do you want to step in it! I'd appreciate a link to that one too please.
Do you honestly believe that someone who was, along with their family, in mortal danger with no other option than to operate a boat whilst drunk in order to get to safe harbour would be arrested for doing so if legislation controlling getting mashed at sea was in place?

Well if you are the sort of person who thinks an old man should be arrested becuase his dog craps on a pavement what hope is there for this country?

There are MANY things wrong in Britain - stepping in dog mess in not very nice but really wouldn't make me join the hordes of people choosing to emigrate!!!

Can't find the particular links at the moment but how about this

Children arrested, DNA tested, interrogated and locked up... for playing in a tree

Any wonder I get so worked up!!!

Ah here's one

http://www.eco-action.org/porkbolter/aug02.html

Crime of the Month - from The guardian

"THREE 12-year-old children playing a James Bond game with a plastic toy pistol were surrounded by police from three patrol cars, arrested, fingerprinted and required to give DNA samples," reported The Guardian on August 3. The report added: "Northumbria police, who also issued the two boys and a girl with a formal reprimand, the juvenile equivalent of a caution, said guidelines issued by the Home Office in April gave them no choice. "The reprimand by a senior officer carried out in the parents’ presence two days after the arrest, will stay on police records for three years, but the prints and DNA will be kept for life." You couldn’t make it up

Top tip. Stop reading the Daily Mail. Mail Readers enjoy getting worked up in a froth of righteous indignation . . .

It seems we were being inflammatory cod , I can't believe it could be that we were unenlightened or irrelevant.

I have deleted some of the less enlightening and more inflammatory posts in this thread as it's getting very long and really doesn't need any padding. I haven't deleted anything that's actually relevant to the discussion though.

John
Well I thought the point I was trying to make was relevant - ie that discretion is no longer a word the Police understand when apply these new laws.

Maybe I should have put it a bit more succinctly though!!!

Thats your privilege John, but there must be a balance between free comment and the iron fist, if posters keep getting their posts removed, the essence of what this board is all about, becomes dilute.
