I used to love these spud guns as a kid but me mam wasn't impressed when she had no spuds left over for tea, and getting whacked over me edd with them wooden scholle shoes she use to wear didn't alf hurt

Then when I got to 15 I got meself a .177 pop out gun and we all use to play quick on the draw in one of the subways in Oldham I eventually got a BSA .22 air rifle which could break a milk bottle

But I do believe air rifles these days are a lot more powerful
Tried looking for a pic of the old 177 pop out gun but can't find anything.

All non FAC air rifles are limited to 12ft/lbs and 6ft/lbs for pistols

Anything higher than 12 requires an FAC, and there are plenty that do go much higher. Mind you even a decent 12ft/lb gun is pokey enough. As a rough guide a .22 rimfire bullet of 30 odd grains gets to about 80 ft/lbs IIRC

Are air rifles man enough to deal with a fox if at reasonably close range, say 20 yards ?

I asked this question a couple of years ago and from memory my local firearms officer said .223 was the min

What's the situation with the fox? does it visit your garden?

There is no legal minimum calibre for fox control, your FLO is playing God by telling you otherwise, I regularly shoot foxes with a .22 rim fire with subsonic bullets.

Yes, it is in the garden, and fouling all over the place, complete pain. Any suggestions ?

Ok, get an old pair of socks and wear them for the day, then lay them in the garden where the fox is doing it's doo!

I heard this on the radio a couple of years ago and told my neighbour and its worked great for him

Sounds a bit silly but it works

Some will disagree with that .. although I wouldnt .. I personally think the criteria is that you have enough power to do it safely and get a clean kill, which certainly excludes low power weapons, and less experienced shooters IMO

I have permission to shoot fox in a reasonably enclosed area with a .17hmr. I really wouldn't advocate using an air rifle, even a FAC variant.

Shotguns are a good alternative though with plenty of stopping power but less risk of over penetration and ricochets.

A humane fox trap.

You can always kill it after it's trapped if you need to.

Personally I would, they're vermin. Some people are a bit fluffier than me though.

lancs police told me that they didnt really like fox's being shot with shotgun, but if i had to then i had to use 3"magnums with the biggest shot size available.
