Meebo is serious stuff - used in places where the penalty for accessing IM is far more serious than at a UK school...... Highly recommended. Look at Meebo repeater - very very clever

Thank you for the above thread!!! As working in this sector I've just blocked a whole more IM clients!!!!

We have real problems with kids using IM it disrupts teaching and learning etc It also gives as a problem as we dont know who students are talking to - Also all our kids have signed a Access rights policy which says that they will not try to access this sort of material - it also gives rights to police to directly access weblogs etc remotely via SWGfL.

I am not a kill joy but there is a time and place for IM!

ps I am using my mobile to access this during my unpaid lunch break! Before you ask!

Why? I would have thought this constructive research into protecting:

a. Your network

b. The little darlings from the bad guys.

Personally I thought parents sent children to school to learn (and get them out of there hair for a few hours) not to chat to complete strangers in another country. Spoilsport? absolutely, about time we had a return to "Tom Brown's Schooldays"

I know this might sound very radical, but you could always go upto someone during break, and talk to them face-to-face.. Back in the old days, this was all the rage..

And yes, I accept you will only be able to talk to people from your own school, but that would leave MSN for after school.. Unless you happened to run into someone from another school, then you could try "talking", instead "typing"..

AUP that might be of interest <---- WEBLINK

This is what our Students & Staff have to abide to - IM is covered under this section; Intentionally interfere with the normal operation of the
Internet connection, including the propagation of
computer viruses and sustained high volume network
traffic (sending or receiving of large files or sending and
receiving of large numbers of small files or any activity
that causes network congestion)
that substantially
hinders others in their use of the Internet

We block sites that are not suitable for student viewing etc - but generally have quite an open access to the WWW. We do not block just because its fun! Last thing to be blocked was a site which had unsuitable images. Instead of blocking sites which takes time we prefer to educate our students into responsible surfing.

I am sorry Hannah but we all have a job to do and mine is to provide a duty of care to the students who access the network. The DfES have got a new agenda called "Every Child Matters" this is just a small part of what we have to do to meet the targets and objectives of ECM. Ask your teachers about it.

Have you tried IM on your Mobile phone? I know our students use that OUTSIDE of the classroom!!!!

To prove I am not anti student I have offered Millermob with coursework advice in the past!!!!
