I don't think it deserved a Yellow card.

Barnes asked Pearson for his recommendation and Pearson said yellow how the hell I do ot know as it happened right in front of him. Rules of the game: he intentionally lifted him of his feet and drove him head first into the ground with intent!
All the TV pundits agree with that opinion as does Gatland.

No he didnt.

Davies lifted him, Ryan turned in the lift and Davies dropped him from waist height. He didn't drive him head first into the ground, but Ryan did land on his shoulder, head-downwards, which I agree, was dangerous.

What's daft is the entire incident was off the ball & unnecessary. and ironically, Ryan had come into the ruck from an offside position.

In fairness to Barnes, he was following the play, as the ball had moved across field to the next tackle when the incident occurred. Twas right under Pearson's nose though and he described to Barnes exactly what happened.

Dai really makes no difference to me I am still hurting from our dismal show!! But I still think Ryan was vertical!
Anyway its over to the next round and I only see France stopping you from glory

Law 10.4(j) reads: Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.

A directive was issued to all Unions and Match Officials in 2009 emphasizing the IRB’s zero-tolerance stance towards dangerous tackles and reiterating the following instructions for referees:

- The player is lifted and then forced or ‘speared’ into the ground (red card offence)

- The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player’s safety (red card offence)
