I think Isle Ristol & 'Old Dornie' are one and the same - try 198235,911192 into streetmap or somesuch. It's actually a little bit north of Achiltibuie itself. It's an OK slip with a jetty alongside that can be used when the tide's up. At low tide you can use the slip, but it's onto the beach then and you'd need a 4x4 I think, especially with a large RIB.

Worth mentioning given earlier posts that the slip at Lochinver isn't the best one in the world either. It's steep, but also dries with a drop of about 70cm/1m onto the beach so you can't even run the trailer onto the sand. The pontoons are good though (and recently extended? possibly?)

Depends who you speak to.. and when [/QUOTE]

I'll need to remember who to ask then!

Diving club used to use it through one contact, but there was a fish farm nearby and when ISA (salmon disease) came along we stopped getting to use it. SHame though because it was handy for some stuff in LLBroom.

ISA causes mass panic so I can see their thinking .. but there are other slips .. all be it a couple of miles away Aultbea for example which is 20 minutes in a rib from Little Loch Broom

Never thought of Aultbea as an option for LLBroom.

The limiting factor for us is usually the 'Club Rib' a 5m Humber Assault. "as seen on TV" but that's another story!!. Very flat hull, and not the best 'sea boat' with 4xdivers + kit (though it could go round 'light' I suppose).

In the right conditions it'd be an option, but as you've said yourself elsewhere the conditions round there always make 'plan b' a good idea and we tend to go for the shorter hops rather than planning on longer runs.

Thanks for that: it certainly looks manageable - but aren't the pair on the shore by the boat up to their knees in mud?

Unfortunately, arrangements are now such that taking the boat is impractical - and also I'm not sure that towing a largish RIB all the way from Bournemouth to Ullapool is a particularly stress free way to start a holiday.

We leave on Saturday for two weeks: roll on the holiday!

Are you likely to be around Ullapool then? If so, perhaps we can meet up?

David

Have a good one

We're there from the 1st for the week, with a gallon of Avon skin so soft

You have a good one too! We've got three bottles of the Avon between four of us plus miscellaneous (less highly recommended) other makes. The current rain up there should bring the midges out a treat!

Speak to you again when you're back.

Hi Guys,

We are going to be up in that area at the time for a week unfortunately we ended up making the same decision and the RIB isn't going with us, but more than happy to meet up with anyone - we are staying at "Seafield" in Culkein, near Lochinver, IV27 4JG (well 10 miles along the single track from there) , if you are out and about then drop in! Alternatively we are happy to come down to Ullapool or wherever as we will be travelling a fair amount around the area, as we will be going on the alternative trip to the RIB ie going on a hammer bashing trip - geology being our other interest!

Hope to catch up.

Vivienne

Oh...and we have battery operated sonic devices that really do work for the midges!

Hi

I detest the smell of deet and citronella that are in most repellants, the smell tends to bother me than they seem to bother the midges, I tend to use the equivalent of these:
