The A55 from the M6 in Cheshire is the easiest route to drive although it is the long way round.

My favourite route is M54 to Shrewsbury, Llangollen, into Bala town but turn right immediately past the river bridge signposted Portmadoc and across the mountains. Good wide road without any particularly steep hills and some stunning scenery. The worst bit is the three miles approaching Bala. Allow three hours from the start of the M54

Pub Low down I think
__________________________________________________ ________-
Food

* The Mariner serves good honest food(Station Square) also the Ty Hwnt I'r Afon (Better known as the 'Twnti'), Rhydyclafdy, serves excellent pub grub. For posh nosh The Plas Bodegroes,Efailnewydd, will gladly take your money and leave you pleasantly empty. But the locals generally eat at the Victoria Hotel, South Beach, A good choice and well prepared.
* Cadwalders on the " Maes" (main square) ice-cream a must vanilla the best. No great gastonomic eating places in town. Plas Bodegroies just outside the town is a musts for gastros on the limited fare of north wales resturants of distiction. Dinner £35+
* Plas Bodegroes - casual top restaurant. Great food.
* The Victoria Hotel, Stryd Churton gives a plateful of food at a reasonable price. Just outside Pwllheli try the inns Tu Hwnt Iír Afon at Rhydyclafdy or Y Bryncynan on the way in to Nefyn Ė both have a warm welcome and do excellent food. Children are welcome and meals can be had in either the bar or the restaurant. Both inns do operate winter opening hours so check beforehand. There are a number of fish and chip shops, kebab and pizza, Indian, Chinese and Mexican restaurants / take aways, cafes and other restaurants in Pwllheli.

Pubs

* M'lud says that some pubs DO serve minors!! I should know! The Tower or the White Lion should be hits
* Check out the barmaid in the Electric Pengwin...cracking pair of tits!
* MITRE
* Pwllheli pub's, well in the day time they are occupied by the local drunks and the unemployable who have nothing better to do,and of course the odd scrounger looking for a free pint and a cigg. while at the weekends they are full of young people who can't handle their beer and start fighting with the pavements, o ye avoid the take away on the high street, thats where these niandathol hang about after closing time looking like they are waiting for something that isn't going to happen. Best Pub entertainment.... Watching the locals.....
* Remarkably few but well patronised, all pubs are drinking pubs (No harvesters) The Mitre, The Castle, The Crown, The Penlan, Black Lion, The Victoria, The Whitehall The Boathouse, plus The Legion club and Conservative club (If you like the smell of pipesmoke and hacking coughing old men and Bingo)
* lots of characterful pubs in Pwllheli
* Crown diso is a rowdy place on saturday night, avoid closing time on the High street.
* There are several pubs but I would only really go into the Boathouse at the Tower Hotel, or the Bar at the Victoria. Outside Pwllheli it would have to be Tu Hwnt Iír Afon at Rhydyclafdy or Y Bryncynan, Morfa Nefyn. You could also try The Lion at Tudweiliog or the Cliffs Inn at Morfa Nefyn.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

* I think that the Bodewan Cafe has the right atmosphere and a delightful mug of milky coffee. The view is nice as well
* Nanas coffee shop just off the High Street, or for a milky coffee try the Yellow Cafe on the Promenade (Summer only)
* Quite good fish & chips shops

I think we should head for anywhere that's likely to be broadcasting the England v Portugal World Cup quarter final (4pm kick-off)!

I don't think that will be a problem. North Wales is known for having an unhealthy following of the round ball game.

Yes, but that's not confined to North Wales

For those of us that cannot be there could someone post a photo of the "pair" at the Electric Penguin so I can add it to my collection.
Thanks.

Or, does anyone (Narcosis?) have a photo of them which can be posted now, so we can decide in advance whether the pub's worth a visit
