Is that the stretch between the rail bridge & the "M9" weir, Bridge of Allan in the Background, or is it first corner downriver of the rowing club? If the latter what time on which day did you take it?

This is where it all gets complicated. The notes I got related to departing from Stirling on a rising tide with a 4' draft boat. The main issue being the "rapids" that form at low tide on the corner round from the rowing club. If my calcs are right, it should have at least 5' of water approx 25 mins either side of high tide. (based on what the "Maryhill" needs for safe navigation)

Now, the times etc I used were based on a 5MPH (not knot) speed but it would appear that if we continue upriver at a higher speed, then we could potentially arrive on the up side of high tide, get a half decent stay, and return (and this is where I am guessing a LOT) potentially 1 hr after high, and still be able to get downriver.

As the tide his high, there should be sufficient draft to make 10 or so Knots safely over the ground, as there are strong outgoing currents, and at high tide plenty of depth (for a rib!) The marks on the briidge piers in Kev's photos show the kind of HW depth available - similar amounts of mud can be seen around the a91 bridge at low tide.

The ford at Cambus will likely be the "party point" where we need to break out the disposable BBQs on the mudbank!

I am not going to post thoughts on timing over it just yet, as I worked that lot out in a sunny beer garden attatched to a pub with a pleasant selection of real ales.

Suffice to say I want to recheck my figures in the cold light of day....

One thing that the F&C Soc guys worked out that was to leave the Rowing club on a falling tide to clear both the "rapids" downstream of the rowing club and Cambus Ford (bnoth with at least 5' of depth) would need a speed over land of 8.5MPH (7.4 Knots)

For the Ribs doing a day trip that should be feasible as we can do a lot more speed and draw about half of what the Maryhill does...

Any of you daytrippers got a forward firing sonar?

whatine you arriving ? if possible would be great for you to meet cansl boats at 330 to arrive in one! even if you are there earlier?

Hi Scott,we are a rib with 4 people(was 2)and are saturday only at the moment.Regarding times,we will just run with the others and go with the flow.Our concern is depth for launch and recovery at PE outwith high water times,but hey, there is always a way.Keep up the good work.Alan

I'm on a day trip unless I get totally grounded

The canal boats are actually quite restricted with regard to timings - Not only do they have the Ford at Cambus to worry about, but there is a very small window of time to get out of the canal & under the M9 where depth and air draft are optimised - I know the "Maryhill" has somethig like a half hour slot to get through, so the River Carron meet may not be optimal for everyone.

If we are lanching at PE, and I assume we can all do 18 Knots throug hthe water minimum, what might be a more sensible option is a meet at Kinkardine (where it gets shallow, so might not be advisable to plane) The planned timings I was told for the F&C boat were Carron mouth 1045, Kinkardine bridge 1120. At 18 knots that's a 10:40 departure from PE, or at a slightly pessimistic 15 Knots ground speed (tide is still falling at that point) call it a 1030 dep from PE. (That pays no attention to the ease of launch at that time, but is simply departure time!)

We could feasibly then all "cruise in company" to the event, (see my thoughts in previous posts above for thoughts on departure time). I reckon Kev's original "out by 4" might not be too far off the mark if we are leaving from the Rowing club, but worst case we could still avoid this (56.126927,-3.924544 into google maps), moor up here (56.123243,-3.930445) and possibly scrounge a lift or walk back to the Rowing club for a later departure?

Only posible snags to that plan might be 56.128896,-3.907716 and the Ford -56.126879,-3.882047, neither of which we have good data for......

Guys the Google map site isn't the best for looking at these. Try the bing maps and get a fright. Set it to birds eye view. I have 6 shallows spotted. It may be exciting but a bit of prep will see us ok.
I would prefer to go up in a group from Pe leaving at 10.30. Shall we compile a list of boats? We could ask PE to clear the slip and some parking for the group. We could also have a couple of guys in waders helping on the slip to save loads of time. I am happy to do that.

Hi

if there are 12 boats launching at PE this is going to take some time and there will be a lot of space needed for trailers and cars.

This will be even worse recovering them so are we 100% that there will be enough water when we come back to get all 12 boats out?

also can you just confirm that we will have at least 5 feet of water if we leave at the right times.

Dave the launching will take a while but thats why Kev and I have volunteered to don waders and save on people getting in and out of cars etc. As long as we all have the trailers ready to go in the water then it should be slick...until a class of laser pilots descend that is.

D'oh. Small screen on "Edge" - I totally missed a screen of postsyesterday.

I will be there for the day on Saturday, at the moment single handed, but I may have a crew.

I am only 40 mins down the road, so a 9am launch is feasible, meaning I could be well clear of the slip & help as required.

Another high level thought for those heading back on Sat- I'm packing dinner - just in case we get the maths wrong!

Mackattack - where have you seen those shallows? it would be interesting to compare notes.
Comparing the google earth satellite photo with the chart, for example, the ford at cambus (unsurprisingly) seems to have shifted upriver by potentially 100 yds when comparing the "satellite shadows" to the chart.
