Southend Air Show 2004 (Viewed from the River Thames)

As the show is less than two weeks away I thought I would bring the thread back into discussion.

Weather permitting I am planning to go watch the show on Sunday 30th May. Will be departing from Burnham Yacht harbour.

Options are to have an early lunch at Queenbough or Chatham Marina? then onto the show for the 14:00 start.

Hope some of you can make it.

( no food available at the marina itself although there is a pub at the back of the marina , however you would have to enter the marina to be able to moor outside the pub and thus i believe that a visitors charge would apply

Hope some of you can make it.

count me in !!

JCW i'm on day release from the misses so i'll come across from hernia bay for the air show on Sunday, tides are really not good and i'll have to launch fairly early and recover late, let me know if you plan to meet up at Chatam or Queensbourgh for lunch and i'll plan to make that too.

Chris,
The last time I went through the Havengore bridge there was about 0.6m of water on a 6m spring high tide.
We will be on neaps so I would suggest the long way around.

I am hoping LA Bamba will be ready for the weekend. The Power trim and tilt unit is in for repair and it is slow progress. I will use the 4.8 if its not ready. Meet up for say a 09:30 departure? Should give us plenty of time to get in and out of Chatham then onto the show.

Bilge Rat,
what would you recommend as a place for a place to stop for lunch?

I'm not going to the show, and don't want to interfere, but by chance was looking at the Port of London website, and they have a Notice to Mariners regarding exclusion zones near the airshow.

You probably know this already.

Thanks Tim,
You are right. The exclusion zone is cleary buoyed and does not interfere with the view of the show.

Wayne,
look forward to meeting up. Are you going back to Levington after the show?

I will phone Chatham Marina tomorrow and check out the price for a visit and if they can accommodate all the ribs.

Chatam Marina

Hi JCW
we should be able to get into Chatam marina without any problems as its a locked basin, then its a short walk across to the Chatam maritime shopping outlet where there's a variety of food on offer in the food court.
Alternative idea is the yacht club at Queensbourgh, we'd moor on the swinging visitor bouys and get a lift over to the pontoon with the guy that looks after the moorings, the Yacht club is welcoming to visiting yachts man.
Alternative idea is the pub at Queensbourgh which servs food, only problem is it gets busy as me and Phil D found out once !!

We could also rn up to Rochester and find a pub near the river.

There's not much at Hoo marina or inside Chatam marina food wise though its only a short walk to the centre.

Have you any ideas yet about meeting times and where we are going to meet up, what channel etc.

Rat

Dont want to dampen anyones ardour but Levington to Thames Estuary / Medway and back is a BIG trip in a little boat! Gotta be what 65nm down the Wallet and round the sands to Sarfend & another 15nm or so to Chatham. So mebbe 160 round trip. In a day. In a small RIB? Not looked at the weather forecast but I hope its calm for you otherwise it'll be a bit of a grind and a very long day!

Herne bay

Alans correct it is a long round though fuel can be obtained at Chatam marina if you run short or cant carry that much.

I'm launching at Herne Bay and comming round, Herne Bay to chatam and back is about 75-80 nm only problem is though i wont be able to recover at herne bay until about 18:30 ish, either means a slow run back and waiting or beaching on the mud and waiting for the tide though if its anice evening might be nice out

Bilge Rat,
I am up for the easiest option for lunch. Chatham Marina is fine by me. I will phone them to make sure they can acommodate the temporary intake.

Subject to final confirmation, will depart Burnham at 09:30 for a leisurely cruise to Chatham. An early Lunch then plan to arrive 13:15 at Hadleigh Ray and anchor.

JCW ....how long do you think it will take you boys to get around to say the mouth of the medway estuary if your launching at 09:30 ish ?

It will take me about 40 minutes if its calm to get across from HB to the mouth of the estuary, maybe longer if its choppy or i go around the inside of Sheppy !!

Bilge Rat,
a couple of hours. I will short cut over part of the Maplin Sands as it will be High tide.
If the weather is bad I will cancel.

Maybe revise the plan so we plan to arrive at 11:00 at the entance to the medway. That sould be ample time to lock in and out of the Marina.
