I'll be out with Rick (12) from about 11.30 - starting from the Hamble so happy to rendezvous for lunch somewhere ...... - Cowes, Yarmouth, the Sloop, the Folly,....etc, - if anyone has a plan before they launch I'll try and check before we leave - otherwise maybe text me on 07840 975807.

I doubt you'll be able to get to the wall of the Sloop today as we're on a neap tide.

I'm up for any of the others, however I'll be having lunch at home and will be launching at about 13:00 or 14:00hrs so perhaps we could meet up after lunch? But with a 16:30 HT I was thinking of an early Tea somewhere.....Perhaps Fish and Chips?

Still undecided as to what to do and my Crew haven't confirmed yet either ......Kids

I was going to ask my Neighbour if She wanted to come along as She's often shown interest, but She booked up a weeks holiday to the Algarve yesterday leaving at 06:00 hrs this morning. So as you can see, people are avoiding me and could well be nobby no mates

We have to be out of the water fairly early to fit in with kids' evening social calander. We will probably be at Hamble Point Marina for a mid afternoon caffine fix / hot chocolate around 3pm as we go back up to the Lower Swanwick slip, so that might be a possibility before you head-off in search of a good chippy?

I'm hoping to get out this afternoon, although with an 11.30 meeting of uncertain length in Wimborne, I'm not certain at what time ...... and like you I'll probably be on my own!

If you're going to be around the west Solent, perhaps we could meet up in Yarmouth? I'll PM you my mobile.

David

I'll be water bourne later than expected too around 14:00hrs I expect.

That will probably mean unfortunatly missing out on meeting Trevor (Dizzy) and pressing on with Yarmouth and the Needles area with the possiblility of circumnavigating the Island for the return leg to Portsmouth.

Thats my plan anyway

Had a great trip down to Yarmouth today, stopping off to Rescue a fellow RIBnetter by Towing him to the nearest petrol station . Had a couple of pints with David (Avocet) in the Bugle. Sunset Cruise back to Haslar and Chinese waiting for me on my return home.

What caused it to sink?

THe main thing was not being a RIB !. At this stage no idea - no holes in the hull obvious, but possibly the bilge pump went nuts and started suckin in water ( the out let was not that high in the hull) and once it got so far the water just poured over the engine well & it went down in about 30 secs .

Owner noticed it was 'sluggish' when out at sea - turned for home & got to within a few hundred yards of safety - realised all was not goog - got the people off at a handy jetty - and as he did so down it went. I'll find some pics that were taken a bit later.

He is now looking at getting a RIB as they dont tend to 'just sink' even if they fill with water ! Looks like his boat will be written off ..........

I also had a great trip down to Yarmouth on Saturday, stopping off at the petrol station to briefly meet Grumpy (who was looking more Worried than Grumpy at the time!). Glad to hear he got back safely. Had a couple of pints with Andy (Hightower) in the Bugle. Sunset cruise back to Poole and Mexican waiting for me on my return home.

Jeez, gutted, how close being able to run her aground?

I had a similar experience in an old rib about ten years ago, one of the sea water cooling pipes split after the pump and it proceeded to pump the hull full of water at a high velocity.

Didn't know about it until i got back to the trailer and noticed her being sluggish and low down in the water.

didn't sink though because of the integral bouyancy of the sponsons.

It was about 500 yards down river when it went down fully & was recovered to the slip by the local river guy who has a big crane mounted on the back of his 35 ft trwaler type boat.

He dragged it to the point where I coud get a line on it & pull with the car.

If the owner had turned left to the river bank, instead of right to a pontoon to drop off passengers he may have saved the whole thing and not dunked both outboards .

About 10m trip to the left would have made a huge differance , but I guess its an easy one to look back on . I'd like to think I'd have run it up the bank and then passengers walk away anyway & the boat is saved too.

Poor sod - that's a shame to see his boat like that...

Imagine that out at sea. Doesn't bear thinking about.

!

As a follow up on the sinking boat..... it was old from new in 2007 with a 90 4s Suzuki at 180ish KG but was only ever rated to take up to about 1/4 of that weight ! ( as a river type boat) . So it sank as it was a floating (just) death trap , never far from being swamped at the best of times.

Alas the insurers have declined the claim , the owner is taking & paying for legal advice & the BMF are getting involved as there may be other boats out there grossly overloaded with heavy engines on a low transom.

Very unpleasant situation - the only good news is the motor has been saved & is running fine , but not much consolation to the owner.
