Given the weather forecasters track record,we intend to launch from Calshot about 10am if it isnt awful and see how far we get, will head in a forts direction if we see no-one.

Looking forward to meeting up with everyone. Sounds like you've made a sensible decision, Peter, and hope we do get to at least say 'hello'.

Ray has very kindly offered to take me out in his RIB, so I am about to leave to find my way to Bembridge by road. I will almost definately get lost.

Hopefully I won't and so will see you all at 11 by the fort!

Rain rain go way

I popped out for about two hours between 1:00 and 3:00 pm for a bit of rough sea practise and felt sorry for you lot if you were out in it. The sea and wind were not too bad - but the rain!

Last week I got soaked by the sea this week by the rain. I had not been out in rain before. Driving head on on to the wind with rain in your face was like being hit by a thousand needles. I'm taking my diving mask next time!

Hope you all had a safe and dry as possible day.

Peter.

Not so bad

Yes,drysuit would have been useful,I had yachty waterproofs on and stayed reasonably dry underneath,I kept the rain out of my eyes with a pair of light tint wraparound sunglasses, enough visibility as it was only light rain, but my Gecko helmet should be much better when I get it(due next week),I have encountered the stinging needles of rain before.
We only had a shortish dash in the rain though.
We had a great time, met all at 11-11.30am,(it wasnt raining then)proceeded back to Cowes, but Blue Ice answered a call to assist in a rescue, and then we answered a call for assistance where a yacht had lost his engine.
We all eventually rendezvoused at the Fountain except for Steve Hall who I think had problems with fuel consumption problems on his charter boat and headed back to the Hamble to sort them out.
It was nice to meet everyone, some new faces and some we knew already.

Yes, I read that thread with interest and wish I'd had a chin high windscreen today. Infact I asked in that thread about water proof trousers and, acting upon suggestions therein, went to a fishing tackle shop this morning to get some chest high waders. Oh, how my children laughed when I put them on!

They made the launch lovely and dry - the only mistake I made was taking them off in the boat when we set off and it wasn't raining. I wish I had kept them on now.

Anyway - I'd like to hear the outcome of your rescue missions.

A good screen can transform your ribbing. It can be very pleasant in the rain. One notable occassion stays with me. The water was flat calm and we were scooting along at about 40knots. A huge down-pour started and not a drop was hitting us. The rain was bouncing up from the water surface about 3 feet and it made a tremendous sizzling noise, much louder than the howl of the outboard. A couple of feet above the water was just a haze of water droplets and mist but we kept on going completely dry.

This description doesn't do the experience credit but it was more than a bit ethereal and magical.

Ok,I didnt want to admit it but my yachty waterproofs were just the top half, bottom half was chest waders,I have been using these when too cold for swim shorts for some time and yes they are brilliant, usually take them off when launched though because if you got thrown overboard with these on,there would be a hell of a struggle to get you back with waders full of water.
I think Blue Ice were involved with a broken down dory,no further details,I expect Richard or Louise can expand when they are next online.

We heard a call from Solent coastguard to assist a vessel with a disabled engine,so having informed Andre what we were doing, sped back to look for said yacht.
We found him sailing singlehanded towards Fishbourne, elicited another yachts assistance who was heading into Fishbourne to give him a tow, transferred one of the towing vessels crew to the towed vessel and stood by until they were happy they were under full control and nearly at the jetty.
No great drama, and probably took no more then half an hour tops.

Definitely a day for the Geckos...

Good to see you all & meet some new faces. Sorry you couldn't make it, Jackeens, we hope to see you next time around.

Glad to see you got back to Littlehampton in good time, Andre. We found it a bit lumpy heading back towards Chichester, but managed to get back in one piece and avoiding all the sandbanks!! Did a quick 360 degree scan round at one point and there was not even one other vessel anywhere in sight - wonder why!!!!

Got a bit delayed heading back up the Chichester channel as we stopped to try and assist a yacht that was firmly run aground just off East Head. Unfortunately, he was stuck fast and we were unable to tow him off, so he had to sit and wait for the tide to rise a bit, angled over at 45 degrees!

Interesting to note you got back to Littlehampton at five as we arrived back into Chichester Marina only 15 mins before that. By the way, we are looking forward to the Brighton Cruise ..................

Very glad we had the Geckos on - they certainly stopped us suffering with the rain - and the rest of our kit seemed to keep us dry and warm as well, which was good.

See you all again soon.
Janet and Bill

P.S. Thanks for the voicemail, Richard. My 'phone's battery died so I only picked it up this morning.
