Scillies Day trip - July 2008 tbc

I've got a couple of days camping booked in hayle for 14th - 17th july and hope to plan a day trip to the scillies if the weather permits.

Does anyone fancy coming across with me on 15th/16th/17th

cheers

colin

We might be interested. I've been looking at the weather for the next 14 days, it's not great at the moment, but could change. If we were to go, we'd probably tent-it on Bryher for an eve or so.
Bedajim, fancy it?

Either.Fal around the Lizard to PZ is a nice run. The weather will probably be the deciding factor. If it's dodgy, going from PZ is the better bet. The other factor is fuel. The last time we went out of Fal we covered 202Nm in total. That's out of fuel range for most. Buying the stuff on the islands is an utter pain and expensive. There's one rarely manned pump not on the water. An appointment has to be made, the guy fills your cans then they have to be carried down the quay steps to the boats and syphoned in. I tend to carry a spare 25ltrs.

Bradders, will your good shed have broken-up by then?

Should we check with 'What the F's up'? He might recommend that we launch from Rock rather than the M25. Or, maybe Ilfracombe will be even less busy.

By choice i'd prefer to launch at either penzance or hayle just to make the mileage not enormous for a day trip...

any local info on either of those sites?

Hi Collin
Pz would suit you better for launching and recover flexibility.

Hayle is only accessible 3 hours either side of HW, where Pz access is restricted to 1 hour either side of LW.

Also the South Coast will shelter you from any Atlantic Ground swell which would ease a proportion of any bumpy ride.

Where you staying in Hayle, we could meet for a pint in the Bucket of Blood.

Alas my outboard is out of action at the moment so Im afraid I cant join you on any trips

Cheers Shaggy

If we leave from Fal we can hook-up with you guys at PZ on the way through. I wouldn't launch out of Hayle, if you don't get your boat nicked off of the slip and make it past the sand bar, pirates will have you in St.Ives Bay. It's dodgy over that way.

Yep - she finishes next weekend and I'm off work for the following fortnight
We haven't made any plans, so if the weather's ok, we could pop down and join you for this one. Always fancied a run to the Scillies, but it's never really happened.
What about Randski, Parkesy, Sticky, et al?

Where are you seeing that Sticky? Just checked Metcheck, not looking too sharp. Metcheck is giving forecasts upto the 15th which is crap. Hopefully it'll improve in the meantime.
Are you on for the 15th Sticky?

Monthly Summary

More rain at times. Perhaps better from mid July.

The British Summer is often described as 'two fine days and a thunderstorm'. Neither last summer, nor this current one have really demonstrated this trait so far.
This looks about to change early this week as very warm and humid air, drawn up from France, should trigger some significant storms.

The humid air won't last long though as the weather pattern reverts to the changeable westerly type we've been used to for so long.

So once again many people will be wondering when the Summer is about to start.
My answer (at the moment at least) is - 'wait until mid July'. This is when the weather looks like it could settle down, bringing a much better second half to July.
Shaggy
