Sat 26th June 2004 Round the Island Race
We're planning to meet up with a friend to follow the race as loads of yachts circumnavigate the Isle of Wight anti clockwise. The race starts at Cowes with a staggered start between 6am and 7.30am. We don't reckon we'll be around that early but are planning to be at Calshot around 10.30 and then catch up with the flotilla. There's likely to be boats racing for most of the day so should be plenty to see.
So do any forum members fancy joining us? If so, either post here or use Channel 77 on the day. Suzuki Pete and Troy, we've reserved 2 seats on Blue Ice for you in case the stealth RIB isn't ready by then!
Probably best to bring a packed lunch as we're likely to be round the back of the island by then, but a visit to the pub is on the cards at some stage!

I will be competing in it; 06.30 start, Sail No GBR 7165T, boat name Bullwinkle
Give us a wave (of the arm!) if you see us. We would expect to finish at circa 15.00.
Our spinnaker is purple should we be on that tack when you are around.

We will be there. have booked a berth in cowes for the friday and saturday nights. Did the same last year and had a great time. At 9:00ish last year the solent was wall to wall spinakers

it would be great to meet. saw you arrive at ribex on friday in blue ice but was helping out at scorpion driving demo boat before I knew what time it was we were off back to lymington.

I will be racing Lively Lady in the "Very old Class" I am praying for bad weather because she needs a bit of wind to get her going seeing as she weighs in at 13.75 ton! This will be the first time she has been raced since the 1964 OSTA when she came forth.Alan P
Must learn to sail by next Saturday!!!!!

Ok Best of Luck to all who are doing it.
This may help.
Watch out for Red Jets, day sailors and Bank Managers, they will all be in your way. Old Gaffers can't tack when you shout "Starboard", at least not before they hit you.
Go for the gap between Goose Rock/Needles Light and the Varvassi wreck, but make sure you know where they both are.
If West going tide from Needles to St Cats. Stay inside the rhum line, and therefore out of the worst tide.
St Cats to Bembridge. Stay awake. This is the most boring bit and you can make up lots of time by keeping on your toes while others doze. Use the back eddy in Sandown Bay if tide still W going.
Ryde. Don't sail into the bag in Ryde Sands or you will have to go back 1/2nm to get out. Stick to the Island side, how ever tempting to go up the Mainland shore. Don't go too far into Osbourne bay in a light S to SW'ly, its a graveyard for becalmed yachts.
Make sure all crew have a life jacket. Have been disqualified for this, but I blame the skipper. Total waste of 7.5 hrs.
The above is general guidance and should not be used for navigation, whilst under the influance of drugs or drink, or for financial gain. It has been, and still worked, but only at the right time.
