Round the Skerries - 12/13 May 2018

I am planning a run to The Skerries on the 12 May leaving Ty Calch Caernarfon at 10.00 and running up the west coast of Anglesey stopping for a short while in the lagoon at the Skerries before pulling into Holyhead for lunchtime. After lunch the intention was to saunter back down the west coast of Anglesey calling in along some of the bays before dropping in for afternoon tea at Pilot Cove then heading back to Ty Calch. Others may wish to take the long way back and circumnavigate Anglesey but my intention is to keep to the west coast.

I have organizied a talk by the RSPB Warden for the Skerries on the 11 May which is the Friday evening (venue to be announced later). No doubt he will tell us about the largest UK Arctic Tern colony which nest on the Skerries. It should be an interesting talk as I believe these birds make a massive migration from Antarctica. A collection for the RSPB will be made during the evening.

On the Saturday lunchtime whilst in Holyhead the RNLI have agreed to provide a guided tour round the Christopher Pearce which is their Severn Class Lifeboat. Again I am sure any contribution to the RNLI funds would be gratefully appreciated.

Finally on the Saturday Evening Fu's is booked for 8pm, initially for 30 with a slight reduction on the buffet B price. (£22 per head). If you know Fu's this should be on the round tables by the windows.

The run to the Skerries is obviously subject to the weather. If Saturday is cancelled then there will be an option on the Sunday. If the weather is good and all goes well on the Saturday, then on the Sunday the intention would be to go east up through the Swellies to Puffin and beyond calling in at the Gazelle for a pint on return.

It has been a good turnout in previous years of around 30 ribs and hopefully 2018 will be equally as much fun whilst raising funds for the RSPB and the RNLI.

Nick

It would be good to see you. I know it is a bit far away but I do like having something to look forward on these dark January nights.

It's not too far - the boat lives in the midlands anyway, and I towed a 6.5 from central london to the Pwllheli RibNet meet years ago, and it can't be as bad as that!

When you said "the Skerries" I thought you'db e running out of Dartmouth or Salcombe and wondered why it was a destination in itself.

There must be a foreign and more challenging version off of North Wales

It’s no more challenging than Start Point! You’d be more than welcome to sample the Irish Sea rather than the Channel!!!

Nah Nick! The Channel is the best cruising ground in the UK, if my boat was down on the south coast, I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. One day I will have my boat in a marina on the Solent & my life will be complete [emoji6]

Simples then!

Would love to one day. It's a long way to pull the boat for a day trip though.

May have to persuade Mrs T that should have a week's holiday on the North Wales coast.
