Round IOW 2012

Hi, I've already spoken to a few about this one, but I'm planning on going round the Isle of Wight early next year.

This will be my first time all the way around, so I really am open to advice on the best time and direction etc.

I think my rib's all up together now and with enough fuel tanks for the trip.

So let me know if you're interested or can offer any advice

Buy the book called something like 'Wight Hazzards' and have a good read for preperation, it will tell you about any water hazzards and where you may find them. Ask someone to get it for you for christmas, most chandlers stock it

Round the IoW

Yep, still up for this. To my mind you need to pick a day that has a convenient high water; I am paranoid about the underwater 'scenery' round by the needles. Other than that, watch the weather St Catherines can be interesting if there has been a blow

If you need ballast and someone to buy lunch I would be happy to fulfill both crew duties ......

Who knows I may even come in useful ?

It cant be that hard can it ? (Famous last words! ) A bit of looking at charts to avoid the nasty stuff , check & pick the weather and if in doubt stay well out ?

im pretty sure there is a member here who went around is a tiny 3 -4 meter parker? if you pick your day it will be a walk in the park!

love the coast line around the back of the island, largely unspoilt and rugged! im sure theres the startings of a forum outing here!

Sorry I should have explained, this is a Ribnet cruise and all are welcome. Just let me know if you are interested and I'll keep you updated.

Pete you are more than welcome on my boat or whatever you prefer to do, after all I do owe you a seat.

I did visit a few places while on holiday on the island and Ventnor looks ideal for lunch? We even walked down to St Catherine's lighthouse.

I'll see if I can dig out a few photos

We were anchored up and Priory Bay once then decided to have a slow potter round the south to The Needles, really nice trip, it was the long slog back to Chichester that was a pain.

Bembridge Ledge / Ryde Sands / "Solent Hazards" nothing to worry about - they're all on the chart and it's easy to set a course to avoid them.

When we went round a couple of years ago we had wind against tide at St Catherines which set up some interesting overfalls - choose time and weather to avoid this if possible.

Make sure you've got plenty of fuel.

Bedajim went round in his 4m Searider that day without a problem - and even had to tow me back from Yarmouth after all the bigger boats cleared off!

I'm provisionally interested, subject to the usual caveats of wind/tide/waether and the additional liklihood of bringing along wife and 2 very small deckhands! I've been round the island a few times as a WAFI (and enjoyed some very exciting times on the overfalls at St Catherines...) and by bike, but would be keen to explore by RIB.

Thanks for all the replies and love the pedalo

I guess we will be launching from all over, Southampton to maybe as far as Poole, it will depend on who's coming and if they are in a marina or stacked etc. I hear Calshot's good in the right conditions and Cowes may be a good meeting / starting location.

It will definitely be on a weekend and I've had a suggestion to do it on Mayday weekend - Sunday 6th May?

As for who can come, the guide lines are here in this thread:

RIBnet Forums - Announcements in Forum : Upcoming RIB cruises

But if you have any questions just ask
