Proposed Plan

I have been working on the Round Anglesey for Macmillan in May and propose the following in relation to the trip. I would be grateful if anyone would check my times and estimates. I have used the Cruising Anglesey publication by the North West Venturers Yacht Club. I propose that we do not call in at Holyhead but head straight to the Brickworks. Those from Holyhead can join us at around 11.30am or earlier if they wish. The intention is to rendezvous at the Brickworks for lunch then head to the Gazelle for a pint before returning to Chrisís for recovery. My idea is to cruise and enjoy the scenery. If you wish to make a faster pace, then feel free to do so - you may want to call off at the Skerries and/or go the long way round Puffin. Anyway, here goes:-

High water Dover on 14 May is 05.35 and 18.03
High Water Belan Pt on 14 May is 05.00 and 17.00

Tides are neaps

The intention is to travel clockwise with the flood tide

Time From/To Heading Distance nm Tide kts Comments

10.00 Ty Calch Bouys 5.0 +0.5 Keep to the channel bouys
10.15 Llanddwyn 313o 13.5 slack
11.15 Penrhyn Mawr 353 o 1.4 slack
11.25 South Stack 32o 1.3 +1.0
11.35 North Stack 36o 7.4 slack Pick up the contingent from Holyhead
12.00 West Mouse 76o 4.5 +1.0
12.20 Middle Mouse 123o 1.8 +0.8
12.30 Porth Wen Stop at the Brickworks for Lunch. This is halfway round and around 35nm
13.15 Porth Wen 97 o 2.2 +0.8
13.25 East Mouse 97 o 1.9 +1.3
13.35 Point Lynas 140 o 2.5 +1.2
13.45 Ynys Dulas 154o 1.8 +1.2
13.55 Ynys Molfre 113o 7.0 +1.7
14.25 Puffin 180o 0.7 +1.1 Passing between Penmon point and Puffin
14.30 Green B1 209o 0.5 +0.8
14.35 Green B2 224o 1.6 +1.3
14.45 Red B8 193o 0.7 +1.3
14.50 Green B5 241o 0.5 +0.6
14.52 Red B12 211o 0.5 +0.6
14.55 Green B7 243o 1.0 +0.6
15.00 Gazelle Stop for a pint. This is 21nm from Porth Wen giving a total of 56nm

It is another 10nm back to Ty Calch through the Straits which can take as little or a long as you like. If you are unfamiliar with the Swellies then follow someone who is more familiar, it is reasonably straightforward.

I plan to recover between 16.00 and 17.00. If the weather is not suitable on the Saturday then plan B is to stay in the Straits with possibly a trip up one side of the island dependent on the wind. Postponing to Sunday may be an option but letís hope that the weather in mid-May is good.

Saturday Evening get together

I have found somewhere for the Saturday evening meal and get together. The venue is the upstairs of the Old Market Hall in the centre of Caernarfon, not far from the Black Boy pub. It has its own micro-Brewery and serves the Welsh equivalent of Guinness along with other beers brewed in the building. I have arranged for a Hog Roast which will be served with three choices of pasta/salad. There will also be a simple cake desert on offer. The cost is £10 a head but I do need to get 50 of us to cover the cost. More than 50 is not an issue and any money made will obviously go to Macmillan. I need to know numbers no later than 10 days before the event.

The Saturday should be a great day in Caernarfon as it is the food festival weekend. The town will be alive with many events. I believe that the Old Market Hall will have three Chefs doing demonstrations throughout the day on the ground floor. We have been offered exclusive use of the upper floor from 7.00pm with food being served from 8.00pm.

Given that it is the Food Festival weekend then I have been told accommodation might be difficult and so it would be a good idea to book somewhere. In the town there are a number of hotels including the Premier Inn and Travel Lodge. There is also camping at Coed Helen as well as some more campsites on the outskirts.

It should be a great weekend and anyone who doesnít fancy the trip round Anglesey can tour the eateries in the town.

In terms of raising money for Macmillan, I am hoping to get a Just Giving page up-and-running through Alex Hutchings (Whisper). More news on that a little later!

The Gazelle slip/jetty will be fun with a large quantity of boats alongside - Few sharp points to be careful of!

So no run to Conwy this time?
